need help w/ heating problem

My FC3S TII has been over heating in a matter of minutes after starting it cold. I drove it for 5mins, then tried to start it up but it wouldn't start. So I got out and lifted the hood and notice that everything under the hood was very hot. So what I did was let the engine cool for about 30mins or so. That is when it was able to start. I want to know what is causing this?

do you see any coolant leaks or any steam coming from under the hood?

Also pull the thermostat and either replace it or toss into a pot of boiling water to see if it's working and then replace it.
