Two possibilities: the first, your throttle cable needs to be adjusted, second your cold-idle system is holding your throttle plates open.

The first is easy to fix - consult your Haynes

The second can be remedied in two ways: the first is to R&R the thermowax "system". Remove the throttle body, clean everything, lube everything, and make sure that it's all looking good. The second is to do the Throttle Body Mod - there's a long thread somewhere near that talks about it, check it out. It's cheaper (i.e. free), but has a few drawbacks, which I'd detailed in the aforementioned thread.

Good luck!

Here's a quick rundown

At cold start, the car will idle at ~3000 RPM for 17-20 seconds. That's for emissions reasons. DO NOT LET IT DO THIS, IT IS VERY BAD FOR YOUR CAR/ENGINE. Start your car in gear, and it will bypass this system.

After that, the thermowax bits hold the idle at 1500 RPM until the car is warm. It'll drop slowly to 750ish RPM as it warms up. If the thermowax bits are malfunctioning, it'll hold the idle unnaturally high.

I had the same problem. Turns out the dash pots was out too much and held the throttle in just enough to idle at 2k.

Worth a look.

well, my car .. when it first starts up... will (depending what gear it's in) rev up to 3k... for about 2mins maybe less... then work it's way down between 750-1k.

Now like in neutral, it'll idle higher....

Not sure if that's normal.
