Need Help Fast

Hey guys, i searched and found nothing so this is my last chance. Its almost -19C outside and i wanna plug my block heater in to keep my engine nice and toasty. Only problem is is that when i plug it in it goes bright red. Like crazy red. This is on my 87 Turbo. And it did the same thing on my 86 GXL that i had. Is it suppose to go bright red or is something screwed up? I've never seen any other block heater on a chevy or a ford or whatever go red!?

You mean the heater goes molten lava crazy red?

I don't know what kinda of heater unit you're using but mine was an oil pan heater-it never went bright red but it was damn hot.
