Need help checking waste gate on Turbo
'87 TII with low boost problem....Checked and changed practically everything. As a last resort I took the air line to the waste gate off and plugged everything up. The car made full boost. I did this only as a test and reconnected everything and the problem returned. How can I check the actuator or the wastegate to see if it working properly?
Thanks for the help.
Todd

Read the FSM, pages 4B-53 to 4B-58 of the EFI/Turbo chapter. Get it from www.fc3s.org if you don't have it.

Jason,
That section was not particullary helpful. If I understood it correctly you put 1 PSI of air pressure on the valve and it is supposed to move the rod when applying and releasing the pressure. Is that correct? What will that tell me? Why would it move with only 1 PSI of pressure on it?

Low boost levels have nothing to do with the wastgate.  If the wastegate fails, you get MORE boost - not less boost.  You're looking in the wrong direction...

Ted,
You're good at telling me what i'm doing wrong but I need to know what TO do. It seems like I must have some kind of problem with the wastegate. The car boosts like crazy with the air line removed but hardly at all when the air line is attached to the valve. Could it be stuck open? I don't know much about how the wastegate works works so i'm having difficulty troubleshooting it. Got any good way to check it?
Thanks for the help as always.

Ted,
I guess I used the wrong term. I pulled the line off the waste gate actuator (the big thing at the other end of the rod) and it makes good boost until you hear this big woosh and nothing (BOV????). Everything on the turbo is stock. Any ideas???
