Need fast RX-7. Read!!
Hi guys, new to the forum. Don't mean to criticize you guys and all, but I was really hoping to see some HARDCORE enthusiasts. I used to want to own a hatchback and do some hardcore stuff to it. Most people will never believe a Honda hatchback can do a 10 second quarter mile and still be street legal. Anyway.... I notice that some guy gets a FMIC and everyone bows down? In the Honda world, FMIC was sorta standard (at least to me). Now, I realize that not a lot of people want to dump a bunch of money on cars, but when I see people trying to milk their N/A RX-7 without wanting to port or anything like that, it kinda disapoints me.
I've always liked RX-7's (2nd generation of course) and I wanted to know if you could turn 2nd gen's into street rockets like the Civic Hatchback 92-95. Of course with the Honda to be fast, there was a necessary engine transplant, and the whole operation of the car being turned into a 10 second beast was gonna be around $9k. Now my main question is, can I push an RX-7 to the 10 to low 11 second line (415hp+) for less than $6k. I anticipate putting a nice fat turbo on there.
Also, how much would it be to turn an N/A into a 10 second animal, or if that is even possible? I could start with a cheaper car, pick an N/A type for under $3,000 and work with that. Thanks!

lol, z06 tuned LS1 in a honda?
Not only would that take up most of the money, but it would take up most of the engine bay, and hatch.
Maybe if they made it a Honda Ciivic stationwagon and the driver sat in the back.
oh wait, most hondas are FWD, nevermind, just put the engine in the back and make it face backwards!

if you can do it in 2 or 3 passes, you can drop a ported jspec in ($2000) with a homemade fule controller ($50) a t66 turbo ($900 used) manifold ($200) FCD ($60), t2 S5 ECU ($100), manual boost controller ($20), nitro kit ($500), FMIC and piping ($1800) Watsegate ($200) BOV ($150) and about 20lbs of boost, should do it... for $5860 but be ready to replace the engine after each event... if you make it that far.
See most of us dont look at the rX-7 as a drag car (Even though rotaries are the fastest drag imports buy 1st 2nd and 3rd place with RJ Shimrock coming in at 4th in his no where near production like Focus. Alot of us 'hardcore' enthusiasts (which I would say is abouut 80% of us) look beyond going straight, and takel the corners as well.
Its the ignorance of the Fast and Furious baby boomers that are being stupid and very unrealistic when it comes to modifying their cars, the only car in that movie that may have been capable of a 9 or even a 10 second pass is that GTO, period. the supra and RX-7 might be able to pull off an 11 second run...
I dont know why am amd even going to waste my tiem with this any further than I have but hey I am bored...but if you are serious about getting an RX-7 into the high 10's tehn listen up.
you will need to start with a blown 1989+ Turbo II for around $1000 (subject to availability. then you will need to buy these:
Ported Rebuild $3500
Haltech E6k ECU $1800
Apexi AVCR $500
T66 Turbo $1000
Tial Wastgate $500
exhuats manifold $250
BOV $200
(2) 1600cc injectors $300
custome fule rail $100
SS fuel lines $250
3" complete turbo back exhuast with custome downpipe $1200
Large FMIC with piping $1800
duel inline 255lph fuel pumps $400
Big bumper to hold FMIC $1000
Line Lock $100
10x16" slicks in teh rear (or at least street drags radials) $250
Roll cage $200 not inclding welding
Beef up rear Diff $??
strip the car $??
Racing seat w/ harness $500
helmet $300
new tranny box $1000
Suspension $1500
486 laptop $200
Misc fittings and wires $500
$18,350 not including labor, this will probally get you closer to the 9's and at those speeds expect to spend another $3000 just on additional safety equipment. I am sure you can shop around for used or discounted prices and get a better deal, but that is basically what you will need. Plus expect about another $2000 in dyno sessions tuning the beast.

honda is such an ugly word
on behalf of all previous honda owners i apologize for that post! lol, jk. Yeah its easy to modify a 92 hatch but its cheaper to take an 89 or 90 crx into the 12s or high 11s with no hope of havin the motor last more than 15k. But honestly dude 10s are hard to come by even with 10 grand at your disposal. I have seen a B18 powered hatch with a greddy turbo kit run 14s on the other hand so...
...anyway I am interested to hear the responses on building an rx-7 to "compete" with the civics. Thats funny, I thought rx-7's were rear-wheel drive sports ... oh nevermind...peace

Re: Re: honda is such an ugly word
man, heres what i say...you can make a honda go as fast as you want. you can also dress a llama up in a rainbow wig and a big red nose and tell your kid you got a clown for its birthday. either way, if you havent caught on by now, this is trying to turn yoru car into something its not. the civic is a FWD girl car, for 16 year old girls who cant drive. rx-7 is a sports car.
anyways, what i've always said, is why make a slow car fast, when you can get a fast car and make it faster. you cant buy a 92-95 hatch for what you can get a series 4 TII for, and yes even a series 4 or series 5 NA will beat that civic hatch, even if it has a b16 swap (read: also civic SI's), because of better torque, less drivetrain losses, a RWD launch, and better gearing.
go get into your honda, turn on the stereo system that cost more than your car, tear off your stickers, put them on your forehead. now, put your forehead against the wheel and cry about driving a honda civic. rinse, repeat

Good lord. UHhh not another one of these post's. Look civic's arent sports cars Rx7's are simple as that. Drag racing isnt anything but if you want to talk engine swaps can we say 20b. The king of all drag engines. look at the fastest drag cars. what do you see in common? rotary and some 20b. fastest import drag car is about to break into the 6's and its a 20b lets see a honda do that. nuff said.

HEY thats not nice dont be talking down the civic. Its a great sports car ( i can hardly say this with a striat face). Dont be telling people its not you wouldnt want them to grow a brain. If they figure out the dont have crap compared to a 7 what the hell am i going to do for fun on the weekends when the retards try to race me. hahahahahahaha.
No seriously where i live its a pretty small town like 25,000 people and all there is here is a import race place and all they really do is built honda's no Rx-7s. Well they dont do much more tan the basic engine swap. Mostly the whole town consists of pretty little civics with CIA and a stupid high pitch exhaust and they think they are fast. Its so funny since i had my TII repainted there is no stickers or even the mazda or rx7 plate on the back. Just a bright red TII with 17inch white spoke wheels. After i whoop there *** by like 5 car lenghts they always say the same thing. "Thats a cool car........What is IT".

interestingly enough though, 9/10 of honda boys have never seen the internals of an engine. the closest they have come is that little sequence in rice and ridiculous where the air rushes through the engine and out the exhaust. considering thats a rotary engine, perhaps thats what they think their engines are like on the inside?

whatever you do, do NOT buy a turbo II, save them for the people who will appreciate them, and what car (besides muscle cars) can do a 10 seconds on less than 6k?
buy a honda......please

I wonder why InterSpool hasn't said anything in his defense?
Does someone feel like a moron?!?!
I dont know if you think "HARDCORE" means having 20 Honda stickers on your Honda, but when people have pictures of RX-7's in there bathrooms I think that is pretty HARDCORE!

Sometimes when people ask me what my car is i do tel them its somthing else like a exotic car and they actually belive me. I usally just say its the car that just beat your ***. Its usually less of a struggle to lie if i say its a RX-7 they call me a liar because most people dont know they ever made a different RX-7 after the first gen.
I got a better one dont you guys always like it when you tell someone (dumbass) thats its a RX-7 and they ask you "Does it have a rotary engine". I wonder civic boy ever asked that. (sorry a joke)
