I brought my 86 NA GXL in to an rx specialist for an inspection, aside from a tune up being needed he told me my engine was A1. when he asked what kind of mileage i was getting, i told him about 230km per tank, and he was genuinely impressed that i could get such good mileage. although reading what the other posters have put gives me hope that once my tuneup is done i can expect closer to 330 per tank, which is good, because i have a cross province trip to make very soon, and i didnt think my car would make it over the mountains!!!

As for my milage, its right about what Icemark said. With normal mixed driving its close to 20, mid 20's on the highway (personal record is 29), and 16-17 with spirited back-road runs. I do drive pretty conservatively in town, though. The key to good milage on these cars, once you have it properly running and in good tune, is to keep off the throttle in town. You'd be surprised how much fuel you waste by flooring it around town.

Just bought an '88 GLX and on my 4 hour journey home made an average of 23.6mpg, mostly highway. Been driving around town today; by the look of it I should make around 19mpg.

It's worth mentioning that there are many links to good mileage topics in the FAQ.
