I kind of new to the rotor world, I would like to know what is the real difference between a n/a an a turbo 2, I know one is non turbo an the other has a turbo, an the intake is flipped from one side to the other on the turbo 2, The reason im asking is im working a a 1988 vert rx7 an the guy wants to go turbo what is the cheaper way to do it make the motor in it turbo or get a turbo 2 motor ecu an all the parts to make it turbo 2.

What is your skill set and what kind of shop do you have? For example, are you ASE certified, do you have a lift, can you weld, can you use a mill, can you fabricate a turbo manifold, can you install and tune a standalone EMS, etc.?
That does not address the fuel pump, throttle linkage, driveshaft, differential, halfshafts, hood, intercooler, boost sensor, AFM, boost gauge, etc. Also, he may not need the transmission depending on the build.

I can do you name it, i have done high hp builds on piston motors but have not done one on a rotor, I can get to a lift in needed(drive on or pad) I also have tuned a ecu via laptop (had a turbo probe) I really just want to know what is the cheaper way to go turbo or make the same power as a stock turbo motor

In that case, you can just use a cheap junkyard internal-wastegate turbo (the stock HT-18 is good) and a Chinese Ebay or junkyard front-mount intercooler, and fabricate the turbo manifold, downpipe, intercooler plumbing, and turbo oil/coolant lines. Slap a cone type filter directly on the turbo. You can buy a used standalone EMS for $400 or less, and sell off the airflow meter and other spare parts on Ebay or on this website. The owner may want a boost gauge, but the standalone EMS should work for this function if the budget is tight.
Rotary-specific items:
1) Use a very thick 1-piece flange (approx. 1/2") to mount the turbo manifold to the engine. Do NOT use individual flanges like you would on a piston engine. See the Racing Beat or Mazdatrix website for flange design, or you can just buy one pre-made from them.

2) Use thick, sturdy metal for all exhaust components. The rotary engine literally blows flames, and EGT is typically around 1700F.
3) Detonation blows up rotary engines nearly instantly. Start rich and lean the mixture very carefully when in boost.
4) The stock fuel pump isn't so great, and the stock fuel injectors are only rated at 459cc/min@37psi. A good boost level for a ghetto setup is about 6psig, and the stock fuel system and drivetrain will support that level if everything is working well. However, the stock fuel pump is notorious for grounding problems, so be careful.
5) See our EMS subforum if you want to know which units are rotary-friendly. You can post on the appropriate EMS subforum when you need rotary tuning tips.
