N/A to TII Swap-How Difficult?
Okay, guys, I'm thinking about seeing if I can find a TII setup for parts in my area and swapping the TII onto my motor. I don't know much about turbos or anything so I thought I'd come here and ask for advice first. Is it that difficult and am I gonna have to get a hood with the scoop like what's originally on the TII's? I'd appreciate the input. Feel free to inform me of anything I haven't mentioned that might need changing cuz I've only dealt with N/A's so far.

So you're saying to just go get a TII car in the first place instead. I would except for one little problem. money, I'm a little short on it (Damn insurance). I was kinda hoping that swapping in the TII setup from a wrecked car or something would be a little cheaper.

ok, youll need the T2 engine and wiring harness and ECU, the trans and driveshaft and differential. if you stick with the factory top-mount intercooler, then you will need the T2 hood. its a helluva lot of work, so usualy its not worth it and id tell you not to do it. but a vert is an exception. we didnt get the turbo verts like the rest of the world did so its the only FC worth swapping over to T2.

okay, so engine and connected components, I'm guessing around 1K at least for those, tranny drive and diff I'm guessing total up to at least another 2K (guesstimating) plus hood (cheap from junkyard hopefully, then paint) so I'm adding up to 3-4K. You're right, not cheap.

Finding a wrecked TII with a good engine would be the best way to go about it. Everything you would need would be right there. Except hood, if damaged.
Of course those are few and far between.

find a TII motor, get an aftermarket clutch and flywheel combo and you should be able to bolt the TII to the NA drivetrain. Then buy a used starion FMIC and have some simple pipes fabricated...

Okay, this is where I get lost, I've only been on the auto scene (actually into it I should say) for about a year. What's a FMIC? Any recommendations on the clutch and flywheel?

Ive heard that a TII motor and flywheel will bolt up to a N/A tranny. You start to run into problems if you want more than stock TII power (182hp-202hp) THe N/A trannys are known to only be able to take 200 hp with out problems.

Do you really need the turbo motor itself?? Ive read somewhere that you could run a turbo setup with a n/a engine, but it would run at a higher compression. I could be wrong though.

The problem with running a turbo on a N/A is that no one makes a turbo kit for it. A custom kit could be made by piecing stock TII conponents together. U run into many problems though. One of the biggest being a stock turbo and manifold does not fit under a N/A intake manifold. They are significantly different. You could swap a TII manifold on there. I do not know how well it would swap though.
Then there is the compression issue. How big of an issue is this? who knows? how many people have turbocharged an N/A block? not many.
Then you have to think if the engine is new. if not the boost will most likely blow the engine in a relativaly short time.

the best way to do this swap is find a tII with a blown motor for cheap if you look you kind find them for around 1500 bucks you have all the parts you need there and then buy a jspec engine for a grand and be done for less than 3 grand than take all the parts you swapped off of your car and put them on the tII and have a winter car or something to beat on for fun

im also doing the the same swap, if you dont have a hook up for the turboII rear end i really dont think you should do it.i think going with turboII with a blown motor is the best way to go cause there hella cheaper and it would save you the labor

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong (which I have a feeling I am) but isn't it kinda hard to drive with a blown motor? I thought a blown motor was one that didn't work.

I'm about to do this swap as well, converting a '86 na to a t2 setup ( year depends on which car I find ). I have the 5spd and 4 lug car, and I think the tranny will be just fine.

the tranny will be fine w/ a good clutch. I did my entire swap all costs included for 1500 and I have some nice parts to show for it too. Im still using the na driveline, but i have a dual friction clutch and lsd. Also 2.5 exhaust, hks bov, intake. this site rules and helped me out alot....http://hypntyz.rx7life.com/t2conversion1.htm

O, and btw whoever said that it would be cheaper to buy a TII assumes that you want a coupe (unless you wanna **** out the cash to import a tII vert) and that you can find one in your area.
