Exclamation Is my turbo good or bad?...

Long story short, i bought a turbo, opened the package, looked it over and checked the shaft play, it has none front-to-back but it moves side-to-side....

it moves enough when you move it that the compressor wheel touches the compressor housing, when i move it you can hear the compressor wheel tapping against the side....

from my understanding it is normal to have a certain bit of movement from side-to-side due to the journal berrings?...

i wanted to get some information about this right away, thanx for your help in advance....

if it touches housing
it is worn enough

BUT
when it is spinning, it will get rid of some freeplay
if it still touches then, it is bad

you could lower the boost and go easy and you coudl still drive the car alot....

it is fine
stop messing with it.
are you having problems?

it could still last a long time, you arent suppose to force it to see if it will touch.

i'm not forcing it, with a LITTLE bit of force it taps the side of the housing....

i never thought even with a little force it should ever do that....

side to side movement is normal, afterall, if you have "no play" how could you move?
general rule is, if it doesnt touch the housing, it is good

as for you? you are fine. i would just run it, and just go easy on it so you get more life out of it (agreed? you broke *** fc owners). when the shaftplay gets great enough, it will damage one of the oil rings and will smoke... great indication, isnt it? even though you could run it for a bit...

just check it every once in a while for the blade condition... once the comrpessor starts shaving itself on the housing,, time for a new one... afterall, there is only one way the metal dust could go, right?
