I agree there is no GS model for '86. Also I've never seen a 2nd gen with a manual sunroof. Sounds like an aftermarket addition.

It sounds like a Sport package. Go to the dealer with the VIN and ask them if they can do a warranty record search on it. I don't know if Mazda keeps records that old but I can get it for FDs in about 1 min. It will have the model listed on the top of the printout.

I've been a Mazda nut for years. Drove a friends RX-7 in '86 (a yellow '79), test drove a new GXL in '88, bought an '87 Sport in 1990.

"Limited Edition" passenger door handle?

I forgot all about it, My passenger driver handle has a piece of material about half as big as it that says "Limited Edition". Its a silver kind of marble looking material with black lettering.

Anyone know about that?

lol, I am going to check that tomorrow. I think the tittle just says 1986 rx7... I Did talk to the previous owner who had it for the last 3 years (2nd owner) and said he has no clue what model it could be. In fact, the car was originally for his wife to drive... Interior quit clean
How far back does the gtu model go?

The GS is the Mazda Japan designation for the Sport Model, in fact in Canada it was called the GS, however in USA, Mazda USA marketed the GS calling it the Sport Package, and later the 88 GTU.

This should not be confused with the 89-90 GTU whisch was a strippy base model.

Also the pop up sunroof that you mention was installed aftermarket, and did not come from the factory that way.

The Mazda internal Model designation would be the FB43 for the 86/87 GS/Sport without factory sunroof.

FB05 model was not available in North America, perhaps you have confused the model code with a part series code.

no, On the sticker in my door jam it is clearly FB05, Top right and only says FB05 nothing else before or after just that in bold letters.

Is this where I should be looking?

A FB05, by the way was a GS/Sport with a 13BT motor and manual transmission. I have only seen one imported to North America, and it was used to gauge the market for a Turbo version of the FC.

No, it will say Turbo on the intercooler under the vented hood and it will have a "GT" sticker on the fender between the front wheel and the door.

You don't have a Turbo right???

lol, nope no turbo... Is there anything I can check that would definently clear out the chances of it being a gs or gxl?

Exteiror was painted over, no way to see ne stickers or the fact that its a mazda except on the spoiler.

now if you had that GT.. then I'd write you a check tonight...

But you have a 86 Sport, if there is no 13BT.

one of the best models IMO.

It says "Electric outer slide/tilt sunroof" Does That mean the sunroof slides out or can tilt right?
these are the only different things of my car from the rx7(-)
wheels/air deflectors/sunroof/sport suspension
Rx7 (-) doesn't have the option for sunroof.

Well, glade I have the sport package, I do have a/c but do I gain ne thing by having everything manual? I guess just not all the extra weight? Any way to check the FB05?

Well there are a bunch of parts that are stamped FB05 or FB01 all through the S4 cars...

On the cars with factory sunroof, it is motorized, and tilts up first, and then slides/tracks back on the outside of the car. As opposed to what many manufactures do, which is compromise the interior headroom, by the sunroof sliding between the roof and the headliner.
