Is my oil pressure ok?

Alright so I have a freshly rebuilt 13b 6p in my 88 rx7. I was getting strange readings after it was warm my oil pressure gauge was at zero. I then patched in a mechanical gauge and got about 55 and it came down after messing with the idle a little to about 30psi. I am running 10w30 and have the thermal pellet installed. Just need some input cause I don't want to drive it without oil pressure. It does raise in pressure when I apply the throttle. I have seen it reach over 75psi under 4000rpms. Thx.

Our sending units are known to go bad, if you got good pressure with the mechanical gauge I wouldn't worry about it. Did you get over 75 psi with the manual gauge? 10W30 according to the manual is only suggested for winter, if it is reading high I would switch to 20W50.

Ya I got good pressure with the mechanical gauge. My stock sending unit would drop to zero after 10-15 mins of it being warm. I will be changing my oil pretty soon so I will probably go to 20w50. I read that 10w30 is ok for 0F - 80F. I guess as long as my oil pessure doesn't drop to like 20psi when its higher rpms then I am fine? I have heard the front o ring being an issue thats why I needed to check.

Yeah 0-80F is fine but 20W50 is suggested in starting and operating temperatures above 30F so its a better range of temps the car would be seeing and it will consume less oil due to it being thicker.

I believe the oil pressure at over 3000rpm is supposed to be ~50-75...I really wouldn't trust the stock gauge. Mine would read 80psi at idle and peg to 110+ when I revved it, haha. Changed it out and back to 45psi at idle and 75 at 3000rpm+

Hot engine, 3000rpm steady speed.......pressure should be reading 60-65 psi on a mechanical gauge.

Hot engine, idle (750rpm)........pressure should be 25-30 psi.

Hot engine, 3000rpm, steady speed..........40-50 psi equals a problem that is most likely the front cover o'ring. Fix same.

Hot engine, idle (750 rpm)..............0-15 psi equals a problem that is most likely the front cover o'ring. Fix same.

All the above with a mechanical gauge.

The stock gauge can be checked out for accuracy. Just look in the FSM. Engine Electrical but might be Chassis Electrical. They give you the value of a resistor for several different psi. You just pull the elec wire off the sender, put the resistor on the wire, put the other end of the resistor to gnd and read the gauge. The gaugue should read a given psi for that particular resistor you used. Takes but minutes to do. Easy. Simple.

sweet thanks you guys. I am trying to get this thing back on the road. I gotta fix a few coolant leaks but thats about it. Last question is if a starter makes a sound like a zipper when you move it up and down fast do you think that there is something wrong with the starter either dying or other? Thx. Other than that not bad on my first rebuild and buying it a yr ago.
