my oil cooler is leaking

my oil cooler is leaking

i was wondering where i can find a aftermarket or perfomence oil cooler. i check mazda and they want like 800 bucks for a oem oil cooler.


please help me out

and if someone can please let me know the size of the stock oil cooler (i searched and all i found was the bolt size not the size of the oil cooler)

Did you want a aftermarket one? You can pick up a used one in the FS section for about $30 all day long. They are everywhere.

Also, did you make sure it was your oil cooler and not one of the lines? The lines are prone to leaking, very prone. The oil cooler.... not so much. You can buy aftermarket oil cooler lines.

One of my oil lines blew 3 weeks ago (oil pressure gauge really saved the engine!); I had the line replaced but it was still leaking (I was loosing something like 1/4 of oil for every 6 hrs of driving). Turned out to be a bad o-ring where the oil line conects to the engine.

ever since i put the new oil lines on there the dam thing is leaking. so you think it can be the o-ring?

If it's near where the oil cooler meets the line, it could also be a crush washer. I forgot to put one back in on the top line on my oil cooler, and it leaks.

Mine is all there, O-rings, good lines, and a fresh oil cooler and the ***** still leaks. I think that I may not have torqued it down enough. 40-50 lbs....

You need to use new washers when installing them. For the front housing, I used high temp silicone on the threads. It won't leak when using new washers since it is soft metal and they tend to deform. Most times you can't re-use them . Shees...they're only a few cents for each washers! Get new ones.
40- 50 torque is about right.
Hardware stores have all sorts of washers.

since we're on oil cooler based leaks...

I just found my oil leak. it is from the area of the oil cooler. plus, i know it is from that area as well since it only leaks when the car is running. i have been toying with the idea of it being the oil cooler lines. however, i would also like to save a couple of hundred dollars if it is not the lines (or the oil cooler itself) and just the crush washers. so, my question is, how can you tell if it is the oil cooler, the cooler lines, or the crush washers? the oil is also leaking in some what of a spray pattern it seems. there is oil all over the bottom of the oil cooler. there isnt any oil from the top of the cooler, and its on the crossmember (if i remember correctly) as well. hmm...maybe there could be some oil from the top of the oil cooler, but i seriously doubt it (it has been awhile since i have last checked. she has been out of commission for my audio install). also, there are two separate leaks, but closely associated in distance with the bottom oil cooler line hooking up with the oil cooler. that is why i am thinking it is the oil cooler lines/bolts it is leaking from. so how can you tell the difference from each type of leak?

sorry for the barrage of questions. i would like to just go the most efficient route with reparations. you know, the smart thing to do!!!

Why don't you jack up the front and spray down the area to clean up the oil like a degreaser. It's easier to see when it's clean.
