My new Rx-8 vs my old Rx-7 dyno comparison.
Once again, I'd like to thank Ralph Friend (Xcesive on the forum.) at Groundzero motorsports for allowing RPNW to use their dyno. If you're in the northwest, and need to get your car tuned or whatever, I highly suggest GZ. Thanks again Ralph!
Anyways, you guys may remember my old 1990 n/a Rx-7. Here is the mod list.
Dual 2" manderl bent exuast (True duel), Removed double throttle, and coolant flow to TB. Ported black elbo before TB. Ported upper, middle, and lower intake manifold. Pineapple Racing 6 port sleeves with removed 6 port actuating rods and rods through the sleeves. An extremely mildly ported 13B built by Pineapple Racing. Jacobs ignition wires, Short shift kit, with FD shift ****, T2 fuel pump, Hi-6. and a Apex S-AFC.
And dyno sheet.
The RPMs are'nt 100% correct. But they are pretty close. The end of the run, is me hitting the rev limiter at nearly 8,600rpms. We where using the power steering pump pulley to get a signal off of. Not the main pulley, thus the incorrect RPM readout.
Anyways, I decided to do a baseline dyno of my Rx-8. The only problem is, is that even with the DSC turned off (button push for 7 seconds.) it still would go into the dreaded limp mode realy quickly. But anyways, this was the dyno sheet.
Note: The Mustang dyno reads around 10% lower than a dynojet. So if my old 7 was on a dyno jet, it probably would have put down around 182ish rwhp. Not bad for a little non turbo!

Sorry for the numbers being so blurry. The car made 160.7rwhp@8,500rpms and 115.5rwftlbs@6000. This dyno too was a little off in terms of RPMs. The end of the dyno graph is where the car was boucing off the rev limiter at 9,500rpms! The RPMs where off due to the same reason as my old 7. So, when the dyno sheet says 8,500rpms, it was realy right before the rev limiter at 9,500+..
To be honest, the Rx-8 feels much faster than my old 7. I don't know if it was the ecu not liking the dyno, or what, but I was expecting the numbers to be alot higher. But what you will notice is that how flat it holds the hp at high rpms. I mean from 7400 or so until 9500 where the rev limiter steps in, the hp is pretty much flat....or increasing slighly still. It would have been interesting to see what the car would have made if there was'nt a rev limiter! Anyways, the true test will be at the drag strip this year. I'll post results and tell you guys. CJ
BTW: My best 90 1/4 times where 14.8@95 and 15.0@98mph. This was with no weight reductioin, on 205/60/15s.

There was an article about this in SCC, it involves the front abs sensors seeing no wheelspin, so it changes the ecu mapping. When they unplugged them things got worse. I think its a play to fix the emissions when smog time comes around.

CJ, you gonna get Canzoomer's Stage I for the RX-8?
Awhile ago, I was doing some 40-70 mph tests in my 8. The slowest 40-70 runs in my 8, we're a good .3 faster than my 7 ever was.
Dltreezan, tell ya what. We can either meet in Woodburn on the 14th at the dragstrip, or maybe I could pick you up for a RPNW meeting. You're the pizza guy right??
I had a chance to drive anouther 8 on the dyno this past dyno day. It was a 6spd, running regular unleaded fuel. He put down 7 less rwhp than me! I was running something with a little more "kick" than normal.
I'm looking forward to the drag strip opening up on march 14th. Then we'll get a real idea of wich car is realy faster. CJ
