my first rx7 (vert w/ pics)
I just bought my first FC. I have to say that this site has an awesome setup and that 99% of my questions were answered by previous posts. I owned an 85 CRX SI for 3 years (im 19 now so that was my first car) but i decided it was time to move on and get a RWD Ihave a thing for 80's sports cars i guess and when I found the 89 vert on autotrader for $2500 with 149k on it, I had to take a look. Its stock other than intrax springs, obx exaust, and a cone filter. I plan on getting at least a front strut tower bar first and then we'll see what happens after that. As far as the sound system goes, she will have zapco amps, ID subs, and focals up front. I'm undecided about what highs I will use. The only problems I can see are a leak in the top (from the rubber above the drivers window, slow power windows, a small crack in the hood, and occasionally the check engine light flashes (not sure what that is) Pics can be found at http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/180926/5 .I'm VERY happy with it so far. What do you think?

Sweet ride! When I had my 87 N/A I had problems with the windows too (worked intermittenly sometimes leaving me with windows down while its pouring out ). Anyway how do you like the 7 compared to that honda? I came from a 86 Civic LX to my 87 GXL and I loved the 7 sooo much more! Nice CRX, that color is awesome!

Thanks for the compliment on the crx. Its actually a POS now though. The hader panel is falling off and the fenders are cracked. I justr moved to OK from CT so the crx had some nasty rust on the bottom. As far as compairing the two, it's very difficult right now. I've only had the 7 for 2 days. So far I think the CRX gets off the line quite a bit faster (most of the interior is gutted so its really light, plus its got intake. exaust, and header. I haven't pushed the handling limits of the rx7 yet so i don't want to compair the two. I loved that crx and it was a lot of fun to drive but I love the feel of a rwd sports car like the 7. The 7 also does very well at top speeds compaired to my crx. It's nice that i can call the rx7 Rex II. The honda blows the rx7 away in gas mileage but 7 looks a lot better. The ladies seem to appreciate the red convertible way more than the blue hatch. There seems to be a bigger aftermarket for an fc than a 1st gen crx (all the rice parts made are for the 2nd gens). Both cars seem pretty rare (i don't think ive seen a 7 vert in OK since ive been here). So bottom line....its too early to tell but I love both cars. I just hope i can get as many miles out of this mazda (now at 149k) as the honda (now at 250+k).

do you know if its still on the original engine? if so then definately make sure to keep up regular maintenance. otherwise you may need to rebuild. have fun with it man. these are great cars.

take good care of it....the harder you run it the more oil it will inject into the chamber.........check oil and fluids regularly......other than good meticulous maintenence I have no other tips.....Welcome to the club.

You got a good deal. I would be prepared for a rebuild some time soon, so if the worst happens you will know what you need, and your down time will be minimal. In the mean time a compression test might give you some idea of how much life is left in her. Good luck!

Let me be honest with you. I (and my family) have owned MANY hondas (I would say about 7 or so over the course of 20 years, one of them was actually an 85 CRX SI that my dad bought new back in 85), and nothing can beat them for reliability. The 7's engine will most likely not last to 250K miles, actually 150K is a lot. Now I'm not saying that 7s are unreliable (well if you don't maintain them then they are unreliable in most cases), but they aren't as reliable as a honda (you can skip maintainence on a honda and it won't bite you in the *** but skip maintenance on a RX7 and it will). But I had a 86 Civic LX right before my 87 GXL and the GXL was 10x more fun. But if you plan on modding, make sure that the car is in good running condition beforehand, because **** will just break even more when mods come along . Good luck with the ride!

Nice little S5 vert 'ya got there- and way to read up- you are ahead of the game in terms of reposting old Q's. As far as the window thing, there are two little metal "rockers" inside that switch, one to close the circuit for "up", and one for "down." either one gets dirty, and it will create resistance on the circuit to the motor, hence slowing it down. Get the switch apart and clean those contacts!!!
Now drop top and ride!

Thanks for posting the pics! As far as the honda goes, not enough is done to it lol. Thos pics are quite old but the intake is totally different now so that i could put the battery back under the hood. Its also got a DC header (hard to find now), 2.25" straight pipe. NGK plugs and wires, powerstop rotors, and some crappy, heavy, pos rims. The paint was mid atlantic blue. Like i said, it got me around for 3 years. Its now pretty trashed and doesn't owe me anything.
As far as the other rex goes i just found out it had some rampage amp installed under the panel where the spare tire is kept below where the top sits. Thats going in the garbage...but at least the wires are all run for my zapco studio

Might want to check why the check engine light is coming on.
