My first RX7
I just purchased my first RX7, a 1986 GXL. I am the second owner. The interior is almost like new, although it is missing the radio. The engine compartment is not missing any parts, the A/C works fine, all the electric stuff works, and the car went thru all the idle procedures like the sticky said on the forum. It revs like a new car.
It does have some rust on the edges of the sunroof and on the bottom fender lips...but that is it.
I have been a V8 guy all my life, and my last mustang ran 9.82 in the 1/4 on street trim with nitrous.
I would like my RX7 to run in the 11's and be a daily driver
What mods can I do in the next few months?
My guess was a header, nice muffler, tune up, MSD, but I have no idea of part specs or brands. Any help is appreciated
Thanks

turbo swap would be the easiest way to start seeing some real power gains. thats what most people here will say anyway. there are other ways of achieving that. you could go for a 3 rotor swap.
as far as exhaust goes, i would say its a toss up between racing beat and corksport. matter of preference i think.
removing emissions in s4's helps somewhat.
did you do a compression test? are the numbers good? if not then you probably should get it rebuilt. having the injectors sent out to be cleaned will help regardless of what your doing, unless you buy new ones.
if you rebuild the engine then you'll want to get it ported out. if this is your first rotary engine powered vehicle, have you read up on the engine? most people claim to not understand it, but thats a retarded thing to say when the engine is fairly simple.

The car is white, I did not do a comp check but the car has plenty of power and runs very good for $900. I have done a lot of reading and I have a few friends who have 12A RX7's. I understand the engine but when it comes to creating power I do not know what works or not. On V8's a simple cam change, stroker engine and some good heads and you are good to go.

Well from my understanding the most important improvements would breath letting the engine breathe. Start out with intake and exhaust. from there move on to ignition and so on. Unless you want to swap out the motor for a turbo. or a three rotor.
By the way i paid 425.00 for mine. Its white as well. The previous owner couldnt get it to idle. The members here helped me fix that in a matter of hours. Lol... now i just need to get small stuff fixed on it and paint it. then i'm good.

stand alone, turbo, fuel, ignition, turboII drivetrain, turboII intake mabnifolds, blah blah blah blah. 5k could get you somewhere, 11's is possible, you would just need some very knowledgeable people who know rotarys and have a stock pile of old parts off there old set-ups and know what works. my advice, start reading, youre going to need it. im sure with the right tune and the right nitrous stuff you could do it but then were not talking daily 11's all the time. should have saved the motor from your stang, she would slid right in but then you would have a bunch of purist chasing you with pitch forks trying to burn your ***** off. good luck.

yeah like fastboy said earlier, the first thing you should do is let the engine breathe easier. should get a high flow cat, and a catback exhaust (racing beat, corksport, apexi etc) from there do intake, tuning and all that good stuff. another significant way to get power from a n/a is to port it. im not so sure about the connection with porting and numbers in the 1/4mile. im sure a bridgeport would get you there but theres no way that would be streetable.

Thanks everyone for the help. At least I am going to start down the correct path. I just don't want to spend $$$ trying things that don't work. I also have some friends in Puerto Rico who are big into RX7's and I am sure they have tons of parts that work.
They have a few cars running in the 10's, well...on 1st gen RX7's. In Puerto Rico to be competitive in the Rotary world you have to be deep into the tens on the street. One of my old neighbors is running around with 680rwhp on his 13B powered toyota corolla.
Enough of that... once again thanks everyone on the tech tips and I'll update when I get my car a little faster.
My first mission is going to be a dyno run, just as it sits to see improvements and my baseline.
V8 RX7??? Is not out of the question... if the right engine drops in my garage, but I want to drive something different. A 500hp + nitrous fed V8 has toooooo many moving parts and they break too much.
