I had been smelling gas when I drive my 91 n/a. Yesterday, I changed my oil and oil filter. This morning, I started it and noticed something leaking out the bottom and then I saw something spraying out from the general direction of the oil filter. I didn't leave the car running long enough to see where this stuff (not sure what it was) was coming from. I tried to tighten the oil filter, and it seemed tight.
A few hours later, I started the car again and... no leaks or anything. I let it warm up. still no problems. I drove it about 10 minutes into town and back. About 5 minutes down the road, I realized that I couldn't smell gas any more. My check engine light also didn't come on like it usually does after about 15 minutes.
After having my car for 3 weeks, I have only one more problem to fix: the rough and slightly high idle. I haven't even tried to fix it yet. first i'll just try the screw on top.
I assume the leak was oil, and the filter just wasn't on tight, but I don't know why my car doesn't smell like gas any more. (It wasn't really strong, but it was there)

i should mention that I believe the oil that was in the car was valvoline 10w30 that had been there too long, and a fram oil filter. I put in castrol gtx 20w50 with a mobil 1 filter.

You better check your FPD!!! You may not be able to always smell the fuel when it leaks. If you're smellign gas, you need to knwo whereit's comign from... could just be you are running rich. It's just that I had an intermittent fuel smell and ended up find my FPD to be dripping alot of fuel.
I've never tried a Mobil one filter.. wonder if it's worth it? Myself I use purolator Pure One MX-6 size. It has the Anti-drainback valve and you really should have it since the filters inverted on our cars. The Mobil 1 probably has too though.

i've had an intermittent fuel leak/smell.
turned out to be an old fuel line, not my PD as i thought it might be. check your lines. you'll have to take off your intake manifold to get at those lines under there.

After driving for a while, I can confirm that my check engine light doesn't come on anymore, which is weird because I had checked the codes earlier, and they had nothing to do with oil

my cel came on again the other day. I think it has something to do the fan, because it only comes on after I've had the fan on a few minutes. I don't use the fan anymore, and I haven't seen my cel since the last time i had it on

Yeah, dude, Id check that pulsation dampener to make sure its not leaking. They are known to leak and cause engine fires. Not such an issue in 89+ cars.
And oil is oil for the most part. Use the recomended wieghts for your car and area as listed on the underside of the hood. Most oils that meet the GEL, or whatever those certifications will be fine. I recomend mazda filters.

fuel smell in car is no joke. don't write it off.
drive car, open hood, look for anything wet. check rubber lines, injectors, fpd, fpr, etc. anything that has gas running through it... CHECK IT!
gas + hot = fire
