My 2nd gen K&N oil filter review.

My 2nd gen K&N oil filter review.
Well, my local autozone was out of stock on my normal M1-104 Mobil 1 oil filter, so the guy talked me into trying the K&N Performance Gold oil filter instead (HP-1004). A little bit pricier than the Mobil 1 at $14 a pop, but I love this thing!
First it’s made of all metal, and right away you notice the 1” Wrench nut on top odf the filter for easy removal, and to snug it just a bit when installing it. Next, fire it up, and OMG the best oil pressure I have ever had at idle 55 PSI, hold the throttle to 2k and Bam instant 80PSI. I was very impressed. I checked out the K&N web page to see the micron numbers for such a good flowing filter, and sure enough filters to 10-20 microns in size. It also has a pressure release, and is spring loaded internally. My recommendation is a must try for anyone who cares enough to buy the very best for their 7.
Give me 2500 miles and I will re review the filter after I cut it open and check it out inside.
-Robert.
Here is an excerpt from K&N site.
“K&N Performance Gold Oil Filters for automotive and marine applications have been constructed from the ground up to satisfy the high performance needs of race car owners and drivers, as well as the average vehicle or boat owner who wants the very best oil filter available. The heavy-duty construction provides strength to reduce the possibility of bursts and helps reduce the risk of rock and stone damage. A Sturdy 1" wrench nut makes removal quick and easy The filter’s inner filter element traps contaminant as small as 10 to 20 microns in size. The solid construction allows for oil flow rates between 12-16 gpm (depending on filter size), and is unaffected by racing fuels”

wow $14 for an oil filter is really pricey. Think I'll stick with the OEM filters.

wow just re-read your post and 55 PSI @ idle is very very impressive, off the top of my head I think mine was like 35 or so.

I have been using the K&N for about 1.5 years now. Thankfully, they cost about $10 in my area.
I feel that it's the best filter I have used thus far.

Um, higher oil pressure (from the sensor) is not necessarily indicative of a better oil filter. The higher oil pressure means the oil filter is MORE restritive (than the older unit). This is probably due to the fact of the lower micron filtering element.

you guys get all "moody" over 14 bucks!!!???
Geeze!
For 55psi at idle, and still filter damn good... I think I will budget the extra 6 bucks
***EDIT***
Ah, just read Ted's post.. dammit.. that makes sense
OH well.....

I haven't tried many oil filters (don't even rake up enough miles!) but I would recommend OEM and K&N filters definitely.

i posted above Ted, i was worried about that also, It filters to 10-20 Micron. As good as any filter on the market. My higher PSI is do in large part to my upgraded oil system, but if the specs say it does 10-20, and it still flows better. ... good enough for me.

The physics of it is that restriction goes up (flow goes down) as filtration gets better.
The only way to get around it is to enlarge the filtration area (i.e. make the oil filter larger).
K&N doesn't make crap, so I'm not against their products.
