My $15 dollar black plastic for the interior - Product Review: Dupilicolor Vinyl Dye
#51
It can look shiny......
It dries flat if you have moisture (like painting at night) or you did not spray it correctly. If you work with it you can get shiny results. I have converted the interior of almost every car I have ever had to black, and this stuff is great. BUT it has it's limits, you will have rub off and flaking if you use it on high wear areas like the door sills, and carpet that your feet rub on. You can use it on carpet that is just for looks though, like the rear stuff in the verts. I got lucky and found an S5 coupe and grabbed the black carpet and dash from it but everything else is painted, actually the factory black dash is the dullest looking thing in my car, the painted parts look shiny and new. I have a second vert that I am prepping for sale right now and on that one I have vinil painted many things, and even spray canned the black body moulding making it the color of the car. It was easy, I used masking tape and newspaper and after masking off the area above and below I cleaned the moulding with windex a few times to get all of the wax and dirt off, THIS IS CRITICAL, CLEANING AND PREP ARE EVERYTHING. Any real painter will tell you an earl shibe job can look good if you prep the car well enough, otherwise even $2000 worth of paint will look like crap and flake off fast. Also black is hard for red to cover since red does'nt cover anything worth a crap, so I first sprayed them with grey primer to lighten them up then 2 quick coats of red and they were perfect. After painting the mouldings they look like the car came that way from Mazda. Other quickies you can do are to semi gloss the wiper arms and the window rails, flat black the wheelwells if overspray is there from the last paint job. As far as the famous cracked plastic parts you can repair them with JB weld AFTER THOROUGH CLEANING, then fill in the cracks with spot glazing putty, it is orange and comes in a tube, sand it smooth then vinil paint the original color. Walla! a perfect idiot lightcover or even radio surround, etc. You can also easily use the cheap carpet from Wal-Mart to recover the carpet bottoms on door panels and rear low wear pieces, but DON"T use it on the floor though, it will wear through within weeks.

What kind of prepping did you do to the carpet?

A few years ago I refurbed an '87 Sport that was Arctic Silver with a blue interior. I too used the vinyl dye. I would not acutally call it a dye as it doesn't penetrate and change the color of the plastics--it seems to work just like regular spray paint. When applied it changes the color but you need to be aware that it can still scratch and flake off as it's just a coating and not a true dye.

Did you use like an industrial carpet cleaner or just like some dish detergent and water or what? Or maybe just buy a couple cans of the carpet cleaner from the parts store?

What kind of carpet do you have? Pile cut like in the TII, or the really short stuff like in the N/A? I tried the carpet dye on the pile cut in my TII and there was no way in hell it was going to come out decent. I got a new carpet. However, it worked GREAT for the fabric on my door panels.

stock carpet that comes with the vert
i had a Tii and a N/a b4, they are both different than the vert carpet actually
i cleaned it just with the auto carpet cleaner that i got at advance auto, the kind with a brush thing on the head

I think I know what you mean the carpet out of the S5 coupe did seem to be of a lower weight/quality. I wonder why, it seems to be the only thing they added MORE weight on the vert. with.
Jeeesus, I will be at 666 posts, I better bump myself off of that number after this one

I used the duplicolor vinyl and fabric spray on my interior 3 years ago. I found that it really doesn't work the best on plastic. For all the plastic parts I used the spray paint sold in hobby shops for painting plastic model cars and stuff. That stuff is sweet. Its called "Testors". Its sold in Meijer right below all the model cars and airplanes. It is meant for plastic so I guess thats why it works so well. The duplicolor stuff looked awesome on all the vinyl and fabric pieces including the headliner and dashboard. The only problem area I have had is the door sills. I've tried putting many coats on and clearcoating them but they still get scuffed. 3 years later the interior still looks awesome.

Wow, this thread is back from the dead. Since I'm the thread starter, I figured I'd chime in with how mine is holding up. It's still looking great. It's not peeling or anything.. it's sorta scraped up on the tray along the bottom of the door jam.. Other than that, Thumbs up!
Poor Red Neck - How much cheaper can you get it? I spent about a total of 15 bucks on it
