Mounting door speakers

Yes. I searched for 'door speakers' and found a few posts about them. it seems that the 1990 version has these, mine, the 87gx does not..
I'm doing some extensive body work on my drivers side door, and everything but the glass for the window has been taken off, I can clearly see the metal frame that makes up the door.

In this frame, it looks like you could fit some speakers! if you cut out the fabric, drilled some holes for screws in the metal, it could be done and look very nice. It looks like you could fit some 4X6" speakers in one part, I believe its just under the doorhandle. Here, I'll get a pic to show you what im talking about

Its also very clear that a 6"er could fit right there in the first pic, but would it be in the way of the arm rest?

So can it be done? has anyone done it? what size speakers?

thank you for your time

I did on my '90, but like you said it's a '90 and the doors are a little different. I don't think the long rods are in the way of the speakers on my doors and I had to use a 3/16" spacer for the rear of the speaker to clear the window when it was down. Cutting the door panel wasn't extremely difficult, and I used some finishing materials from Parts Express(speaker grills) and McMaster Carr(edge trim), so it didn't look like a total hack job when finished. It did make a huge inprovement overall on my stereo by moving the 6 1/2"s I had in the rear towers to the doors, as it changes the soundstage to your front as opposed to your back. It'll take a little time and effort to figure out a good fitment of both speakers and grill without any intereference of other parts but I think it was well worth it.

On the 86-88.5 doors the speakers are a true 6 inch mounted on a plate, above the arm rest in the hole as shown in your top picture.

On the 88.5+ doors, there is a hole at the bottom front of the door, in the area you are suggesting in the bottom picture.

a 4x6 inch speaker is probably one of the worst sounding speakers possible for a car and should be avoided like the west nile virus. A 5 inch or true 6 inch speaker will fit in that area, if you cut a plate and mount it to that plate.

And please wait at least 24 (perferable 48 hours) before bumping. Bumping before 24 hours have gone by suggests that you are an impatient baby.
