It takes about 2 nuts/bolts to take the air pump off. Benefits?...less drag on the engine.

Remember if you remove the smog pump you will need to replace the cats with a RB presilencer.

The main cat will overheat and meltdown (read Clog!) without the air from the pump.

And in the USA you will be violating Federal (and possibly state) laws removing the smog pump and cats unless this is for a car never driven on the highway and state roads, I/E a race car for the race track.

To increase the air intake; replace your stock air box with a cold air box and freeflow cone intake like the K&N or Apexi.

airpump

i would like to remove mine also but what about the 6 port actuators aren't they opened by the air pump. also i have a custom exhaust on my 88 gxl that consists of no cats stock size pipes and a 24 inch glaspack on my main pipe, no mufflers, it isn't that loud at all.

The smog pump only actuates the 5th/6th ports on the series 5 (89-92) cars.

That glass pack on a NA will burn itself out if it has not done it already in very very short time. The most I have ever heard of a glass pack lasting in a NA was 60 days before it was burnt completely out.

I had a race pipe from Rx7.com with a custom dual catback with a glass pack on either side. GODDAMN that was loud! Sounded kickass too, but it didn't even make it through the breakin period of my engine.
Don't get glass packs unless you don't mind replacing them every 500-1000 miles or so.

the only benefit is less parasitic drag? i already have an air filter and my cat is hollowed. i was forced to install 91 turbo injectors due to a fire. I am running super rich. I just wanted a way to lean it out a little

You’re injecting about 20% more fuel than you should be! Nothing short of a fuel controller (like an Apex S-AFC) will get you lean enough, and even that might not pull them back enough. I’d hunt for some NA injectors.

Buy an S-AFC and tune your fuel down....

Exhaust Flow

A pickup tube in the main cat or in a presilencer catches the exhaust and diverts it to the 6p

You can also buy a modified header from M-trix that will actuate them.
