Moneys worth: Rebuilding and Porting???
Well, Its getting close to that time, I think im going to try and save up before my engine blows and atempt to rebuild it.... but things were going through my mind....
How can I get the most realiability, Power and Driveability from a Rotary Engine...
From what i understand, Rebuilt S4 N/A engines last around 80,000 Miles(correct me if im wrong...)
Im planing to have $3,000 for the COMPLEATE REBUILD... but what i was thinking was New Housings(Brand New Out of Box) and then rebuild it... and while im in there give a decent port(SP? BP? 1/2BP? PP?) I was thinking about taking my motor to East Coast Rotary(bruce) and leting him go at it... could every thing that ive listed be done for that $$$ Frame? My main Q? is how much are new housings going to run and will it be worth it(as far as reliability) Will I be able to get a Brand new 200,000+ Mile Rotary out of $3,000
What i would like the end result to be is a RELIABLE Engine putting down Decent Numbers... Maybe somthing that could run in the 12s. Im not planing to drive it daily, so a bridge port might not be a bad idea. This is basicaly going to be a Screw Around/Auto Xish/ Drifting Machine... Kinda of an all around car. But From an NA... All Throttle No Bottle no forced induction...(a nice little NA for you TII ***** lol jk)
Ideas and thoughts appreciated... Or you know of a better idea on how to blow my money, leme know

If reliablity and longevity are the main factors than go no more than a streetport. Some say that any porting decreases engine life, so stock ports would last longer than a street port according to them. What do you consider decent numbers? You can only squeeze so much power out of an NA engine.

na trying to stay away from Forced Induction... I Figured that if i could get like 150,000 Miles out of a Mildly Tuned Engine, that would be Great... I just dont want have it rebuilt and then turn around to do it agian soon.
Decent numbers? I duno, I was thinking SP myself because of the loss of tourqe... maybe 160-180RWHP... does that sound Unreasonable? I dont neeed to be able to do 12s in the 1/4, Just want enough Hp to get around a Track quickly. the main reason im considering porting is because itlll be apart, Why Not? How much power would it take to be able to break traction in like 2nd gear? Could go all RotaryResurection Style and just port the Aux Ports... If Bruce is too expensive, ill have Kevin do it... its just Bruce is down the street and kevin is in Knoxville if im not mistaken.
Actualy I wanted a Perpherial Port...(HELL YEAH,787B Style...) BUT being all thats involved and that the engine wont last long... that fell through... Wanted my car to sound like a Pissed off Chainsaw... lol

hey, just got a thought, what if i got a jspec and rebuilt from there? sell the turbo rotors and use the housings... wait, those are 4ports arent they, damn it...
cheap isnt a word i like to use(evev though i have manny times) more like cost effective... why dont i rebuild it myself? 1 not set up to do it(yet) and 2 im a retard when it comes to Major stuff, thus paying someone else to do it... what would i really need other than a socket/wrenches and hoist and stand? might diy it.

Most rebuilds should come with new rotor housings.. There is an engine rebuild thread floating around which lists different places to get one. Go to their sites and compare differences in what you get for your dollar. Use the search button and you should be able to find the thread, or perhaps someone on here will provide ide for you.

Most rebuilds DON'T come with new rotor housings. Not with the standard rebuild. As you "buy up" a tier or two they will. But the standard rebuild for around 2k does not. It's simple math, at $527 each for new rotor housing, you can see for 2k, you are not going to get new housings.

Hey Mrfc3s, I am getting an engine rebuild "because the j-spec from Osakajdmmotors.com had a bad coolant seal" for ($1,400 + $800 for uninstall and install) and a large street port for $400 by a cool guy named Chris from Indiana at Banzai Racing (www.banzairacing.net) Thats $2,600!!

i have a planed buget of 3,000, if it ment new housings i could throw in 200 more for new housing, but would it make enough difference to justify spending the extra 1200 bucks?
2000 is the standard rebuild? how long do rebuilds usuly last?

i would ask kahren. he is very compotent and i think he can do what you want for around that much or less. he also does whicked porting. get his stage 2 port, and then get an afc, and a full exhaust and your looking at 200 hp +

Used housings have a life span on them. I have seen turbo motors get around 130 - 150k in stock trim before the coating starts to flake. If that happens, even with new seals, you are going to start losing compression FAST. If you are looking for reliability, get the new housings, you won't regret it.

Dude if you are in NC you gotta get Bruce Turrentine to build your ****. I know of literally 5 different cars in Raleigh that have Bruce Motors: 3 turbo IIs and 2 FD's. All of them are running really strong. I've never met the guy personally but I know people who swear by him. His prices are reasonable too.

mycarisolderthanme and rotorforce - There's some dyno sheets laying around (maybe in the dyno section?). I'm not sure exactly where, but he did pull that one off. I think it was a stock port engine that had a custom (or at least ported/modified) intake manifold.
