MN mechanic
#2
I'm pretty sure any mechanic shop will do it, as for the quality of work I have no recommendations as I have yet to replace it.
If you are looking for a rotary specific mechanic, then I'm afraid that there aren't many, if any, other than the Mazda dealer here in MN. There are also numerous horror stories about their service in general.
You could always try to tackle this on your own, if you have the time/mechanical knowledg and you'd save a few bucks.

We did the clutch in lechnoids car in a garage with a bare minimum of comfort (it was bloody cold) and tools. (his toolbox has a lot to be desired) with no floor jack either...
It can be done, the tranny isn't horribly heavy or difficult to remove. I wished we had more space than his shorty ramps when doing it though. my ramps are taller and then I would've raised the back of the car as well.
Shouldn't take you more than a few hours to do it yourself. Or you could take it to universal driveline in white bear lake. He's done a couple of my trucks clutches and they've lasted for me.

Thanks for the replies! We have thought about doing it ourselves, but have not tackled anything like this before. We just gutted the cats and are installing a corksport cat back. If anyone knows of a really good link with step by step clutch install, please let me know.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

It can be done. I went to Walser on 494 & Lyndale in Bloomington, it was like $800-1,000
I bought a stock clutch through a friend (discounted) for like $150 or so. Did all the work myself.... not that hard.
You just need a flywheel puller, 2 1/8" socket, impact gun, 10, 12, 14, and 17mm sockets, ratchet w/ xtension, WD-40 or Kroil, flywheel alignment tool, bearing puller and a bit of patience. New parts to look for are Clutch, pressure plate, T/O bearing, and possibly rear seal. It CAN be done though .
I NEVER EVER let the dealership touch my car. They dont konw the first thing about rotaries and most of the mechanics I know personally abuse teh cars since they think it's a worthless rotary POS.
Oh yeah, there is RX-7 Heaven up in Roseville, but I wouldn't let em touch my car either. They didn't even know the differnence between the S4s and S5s! They overcharge too. Only go there if you need some spare parts as they have many junked FBs and FC's sitting around... collecting dust .
Oh yeah, get a Haynes manual (from local Red Rooster) and it has very good instructions on how to do this (that's the way I did it ).
