Messed up timing cause overheating or other problems?!?

I was wondering if having bad timing can cause overheating and a bad idle? I have these and am looking for the answer to my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Bad idle yes.

This is a guess: Severely advanced timing could cause detonation, which would lead to higher temps--personal theory.

Well somehow my car fixed itself. It now runs nice and cool again & then I looked under the hood and one of the lower wires was off the plug. Put that back on & the car ran good again. Still has a really high idle though. How can I fix that? & how can I adjust the timing? Thanks alot.
