malfunctioning thermostat?

I started my car up the other day (a very cold day) and everything was fine until the temp gauge started rising. The first thing I noticed was that even though the engine was warmed up I wasn't getting any hot air through the heater vents. After this, I payed close attention the temp gauge (stock). It kept climbing until it got above 3/4 on the temp gauge. I was just getting ready to pull over and shut her off when all the sudden I got hot air through the vents and the temp started to fall back down to normal. Every thing remained fine for the rest of the drive. So, does this sound like a sticking thermostat? Is the heater core in line with the thermostat such that I wouldn't get hot air if the t-stat was stuck closed? Currently I have a mazda oem t-stat that is a little over a year old.

thanks
kevino
