make white guages?

i've heard alot about scanning and printing to make white guages...i can understand how this would work but what are you supposed to do for the lights? should i just cut out the numbers and the speed marks so that they lightup? this might not look too great after that! if anyone has done this please let me know

The guages are lit from the front, so it doesent matter.

They are lit from the front and back. I had some that were totally white, and with the lights on at night, you could see the old numbers behind the new ones. The front lights are just to light the hands of the gauges. The rear ones light the numbers and markers etc...
