Major fuel delivery problems? (Semi-long)

1988 TurboII

A while ago I posted about having issues with my car bucking semi-violently when it was given low throttle when it was cold. I was told that this sounded like a textbook case of a maladjusted TPS. I adjusted the TPS and it seemed to go away for about a day.

Then it came back with a vengeance.

When the car is cold I can't give it more than 1/4 throttle or else it completely bogs and has no power and intermittently bucks and shudders. I can give it small amounts of throttle and then get it up to speed. When it warms up it will still occasionally do it, but I can still feel it 'missing' a bit when I'm driving. Like if I am cruising at about 60 MPH on the freeway, that takes very little throttle to do at all, and it will suddenly have no power for a split second and then come back on, it's like if I had let off the throttle for a second then put it back on but my foot never moved.

Now the other interesting thing is that this only seems to happen when I am in gear. I can sit in my driveway and rev it till the cows come home with as much throttle as I want.

Anyone have any ideas? I think I either have a really dirty fuel filter, which would be odd considering this one is only like 10k miles old, or that I fucked up and waited too long and let the car cool down too much when I adjusted my TPS.

I'm gonna give the TPS adjustment another try tomorrow and see how it goes.

Any input would be FANTASTIC.

I know you've set your TPS, but have you tested it for shorts or blow opens?

I truly doubt its a fuel delivery problem.

Check your timing too. Definitely sounds like a timing/tps issue.

It could be a fuel delivery problem.May be a weak pump or even the filter. If you wait till you are less than 1/4 tank of gas you could get dirt into the filter.Put a fuel pressure tester on it and find out how much psi it's producing. And check your vacuum lines as well.A leak in the vacuum system can make a rotary run crazy. Then check your timing.

Hmm.. all good things to think about. You guys think that my tranny might be slipping? I've been having lots of clutch problems lately, and lots of vibration. the clutch engages very harshly, quite the jolt, and it makes a loud clunk when it does it also. I dunno, this car just seems to be falling apart all around me.

I had very similar symptoms about 18 months ago. Cruising was fine but any load caused massive hesitation. Initially it was only bad when cold and disappeared when warm. Then it seemed to last for longer and longer before clearing until eventually it was there all the time. I too could rev it freely in neutral, but not under any load.

It turned out to be nothing more than a worn-out factory leading spark plug wire. I bought one lead to swap each one in turn (didn't want to buy a whole set in case they weren't the cause), and the first one I tried cured the problem completely.

I think it had a break in it that was closed when the wire heated up in the engine bay. As the internal arcing ate away the conductor the problem got steadily worse. Just a guess.

This may not be the cause of your symptoms, but it's something to check.

Alright, i'll check my wires, I hope it's nothing too terribly serious.
