For the NA's: The 86-88 GXL had LSD and the 88 GTU (w/ hard suspension) had LSD. The 89-90 "GTUs" limited production model had VLSD and also a 4.300 final drive ratio.
All 5-speeds had a 4.100 final drive ratio. All automatics had a 3.909 final drive ratio, with the exception of the later convertibles which had a 4.100.

This seems to be a common misconception. My vert is a 91 and came stock with an auto and an open differential with the 3.909 ring and pinion. Maybe mine is the exception?

The 88 vert came with an open 3.9 rear end (there were not automatics available on the vert in 88), while the 89-90 verts came with a 4.1 open rear end regardless of tranny, and the 91 verts came with a open 3.9 on autos and 4.1 on manuals.

Does it make a difference that it is auto and mine is a 5spd will it still bolt on?
Also if anyone can think of any cons to the swap I would like to know before I do the swap. Can't wait till spring break. What will I need for the job like Toolwise and Parts wise and around how much time would it take to do with a friend helping me maybe two other guys. How hard is the swap to do?

If you just swap rear ends, (and don't put your existing 4.1 pinion and gear on) you will slightly loose acceleration, but you will get better gas mileage and increased top speed.

The job will take:
5 hours on the ground by yourself
3 hours on the ground with one friend
2 hours on the ground with two friends
3 hours on the lift by yourself
1 hour on the lift with one friend
45 minutes on the lift with two friends
Regular hand tools are all that is required. A pair of jacks will need to be used if you're working alone to raise the diff (it's heavy as hell).
I would not go to the 3.9. The acceleration from a stop will be noticeably slower. And unless you drive on the highway more than half the time I can't see mileage being much of a factor. Top speed is for people with helmets and roll cages.
