lower intake gasket replacement 87 TII

Could someone please tell me exactly what materials I'll need in order to replace the lower intake gasket (that is, the intake manifold to engine gasket) on an 87 TII?

I was temporarily naive enough to think that I might only need the upper and lower intake gaskets, and the o-rings. Then a guy at Mazdatrix told me I need to take the turbo off as well, and that I'd need "all kinds of gaskets."

So now I'm wondering, what exactly do I have to remove, and which of those things can be removed together, thereby avoiding as many gaskets as possible?? Some of those things are expensive.

Mazdatrix is wrong.&nbsp You can typical resuse the metal gaskets that seal up the turbo; this includes the engine to manifold, manifold to turbo, and turbo to downpipe/pre-cat metal gaskets.&nbsp If they are trying to get you to buy $100+ worth of gaskets you don't need, they are just trying to rip you off.

you will need alot....


you will want to drain your oil and coolant, so you need new stuff.

probably need turbo to downpipe, turbo to manifold, manifold to block.

maybe oil and water line gaskets.

upper intake to lower intake, lower intake to block + coolant O ring (important)

you "may" be able to use some of the turbo ones. but if you don't have them on hand before you start, and you end up needing one. it'll suck to wait another week to get it

I would not say they are trying to RIP YOU OFF, they are just saying if you want to be 100% sure you want have any leaks then replace old gaskets with new. I'm sure you problay could reuse the old ones but you won't be 100% sure they will seal completley. so its almost a gamble. Also take in to consideration of removing everything again after you find out your old gasket is leaking.

I still call it trying to rip you off...

Even if the old metal gasket is bad (i.e burned/cracked), you can still reuse it just to get the car running.&nbsp Leaking exhaust gaskets don't prevent the car from running.

what determines a bad gasket for the metal ones...im buying 135 bucks worth of gaskets friday, and if i can re-use the metal ones, that would save me an *** load

burnt/cracked?

is that it...or are there other factors to look into?

Please do post how to tell a bad metal gasket though... I will need to know that if I try to reuse mine.

Also, can anyone recommend ways to remove gaskets that are stuck to the manifolds/block/whatever?

No sealant just put it there. If you use the metal lower intake gasket i think you might needs something there. Call Atkins rotary about that.

I do not understand why your tubro comes off for a lower intake removal. I do not think that is correct.

I had to remove my turbo and I replaced every singe gasket and crush washer. $80 from mazdaformance.com.

Mazdatrix is a waste of everybody's time for stock parts. Now if you do any sort of sanctioned racing you can get a Mazda Speed stock part hook up. Their prices will shame any stock part seller.

IMOP, if you remove something that is a pain in the *** to do. Do it right the first time so you don't do it a second time.

And no sealants are need on those gaskets.

Are you sure you need to replace the gasket?? I had an incorrect diagnosis on my car and ended up getting a perfectly good lower intake gasket replaced.

Anyways, yes the turbo has to come off (can't get at a couple of the bolts with it in place) but you don't need the block to manifold gasket as you can leave the manifold on. The turbo gaskets are pretty tough, I could re-use both the turbo-manifold and turbo-downpipe. You should replace the gaskets for the oil and water lines on the turbo but those aren't terribly expensive. All in all, its a lot of work/cost to replace a $5 paper gasket. Make sure you measure the manifold for warping with a good straight edge, if its warped you'll need a new one or to get it machined.

Been there, done that, got the bill to prove it,

That is a good idea to check for manifold warping. Wow. Never even thought of that.

How did you know it was warped. What were the symptoms.

Does one simply have to request things at the mazdaformance website? I've gone there many times but haven't seen things like gaskets.

If they really are cheaper, I'm there. I just assumed they only had the selection of parts for which there are links...

The said that sometimes they will place little gifts in their orders. I got a hardcover book on the 3rd gen. That big book with the red 3rd gen on the front that goes for $30 on ebay. I was like, "I didn't order a book". They are like it is a gift!

Checked with Mazdaformance, and yes, looks like about $80... My only problem is they only have the paper lower intake gasket. Does anyone know where I can get a metal one? I seem to remember having one for an NA at one point, so I figure they at least exist for the TII somewhere...

Here's my price list from Mazdaformance:

N318-13-111D...paper style gasket only. $3.94
N318-13-112...$2.25 (I assume this is the upper intake gasket)
N3Y4-13-711...$30.79 (one of the two gaskets for the turbo)
N318-13-491A...$38.33 (the other gasket for the turbo)

9956-21-400 -4 @$1.61ea...crush washers for oil lines to Turbo (they volunteered this info - sounds good to me)
N236-13-631 gasket for oil pipe to turbo $2.03
N236-13-638 gasket for oil pipe to turbo $2.06 (makes sense that there's two - for two oil lines)

Now I'm also wondering... does COOLANT go through the turbo? I'm thinking it must, since Trix sells this: http://www.mazdatrix.com/getprice.as...m=13-5350-N386 ... if so will I need two of these?

I need to frickin move right next to one of these RX7 places. It would make my life a lot easier. What the HELL did people do before the internet?

I don't think Mazda made any metal intake manifold gaskets for the FC.&nbsp I wouldn't want a metal gasket for the lower intake manifold anyways, since that'll pinch the o-rings a little too much for my comfort.
