Low power, red exhaust

Help a newbie out please. I have a nice 86 RX7 13b. It ran fine then sat for 3 years. Now after a thorough tune up and filter changes etc, it runs weak and the converter glows red. I don't think it is clogged since the tail exhaust is strong. 1 rotor blackens the plugs and the other leaves them clean. I like this car and want to fix it. It now has 153K miles on it. Is it too tired to fix? I did the ATF trick and it did help a bit. Thanks. Bill

You may have a bad cat or bad ACV and split air pipe. Get a Haynes manual. It will show you what I speak of. Good Luck!!

Sounds like you're running really rich. CHeck your injectors, esp. the ones on the rotor that isn't burning cleanly. Change your plugs and wires.

I have already done that work with the tune up. I also checked the coils and they are strong. Exhaust pressure at the tips seems strong too! It does drive, bur dies on a hill. Everything else like tires, brakes, body, trans, etc it excellent! Help me save this car. Bill

I would check the compression before doing anything else, just so you know if it's worth the time to fix it.

hate to tell you but...

I can almost bet that you cooked your motor. This is exactly what happens when you loose your rear rotor.

How do you "cook" a motor? What do you do if thas true? Need to know more about a J-Spec motor, like $$ and where to buy. Bill

J-Spec motors are turbo.

A cooked motor means that it's blown, lost a seal.

The best way to find out is to get a compression test.

The search feature in the upper right hand corner of the page is a great tool. Most of your questions will be answered using it.

Guys, I must apologize. This Dweeb e mailed me, PM'd me and posted on all my post about my offer on his for sale car with a blown motor. I understand his pride and reluctance to sell low but I do not understand his harrasment and language. Are we RX7 enthusiast or cry babies? Isn't his picture posted above about as ugly as a dude can get? He looks like a gay mommas boy. Bill

$250 is low

$250 is low even for "negotiation" room and i would think $2000 is high but its in the ballpark for negotiation... most people go down $1000+ from asking unless otherwise stated.

Yes I admit that $250 was low just as $200 is high. You buy low, sell high and negociate to a point inbetween. Rather than counter offer or simply say nothing this Dweeb decides to harrass me and that was wrong and uncalled for. I PM'd him an offer and he publically posted profanitty. Pride is one thing but he's just immature and a mommas boy! I posted here looking for advice and he gives me an attitude. One has nothing to do with the other. I kept it private, he didn't. Bill

Gotta agree with you there....
Who the hell would pay 2000 bucks for a 7 with a blown motor????
Anyways, this is totally immature, The only people that feel that they have too go out of there way to tell other people who really don't give a rats *** about your little bitchfests, are people that must be horribly insecure.... and by looking at that guy's picture, I guess i'd be insecure too. (Gotta look in a damn mirror.... That must suck!!)
He has a 7?? I though most people that look like that drove rusted out Shadows with crome plastic hubcaps, cow seat covers, and an unopened box of "Ya Right" condoms in the glove box- right next to the rufies.

I hope this thread gets closed, and both of you guys (especially the ugly one) keep this to yourselves- We don't care, and I really hate people that just go out and flame others.

PS- This isn't actually directed at both of you- Bill apologized for bring this into the open- the ugly guy should just shut up- this forum isn't for bitches.

I rarely get pissed, and I am doing exactly what I am saying not to, but hey, there's a time and a place to act like that.. and it ain't here!!.

Thanks, and have a nice day
Dan

With that said, well said by bambam7, can we get back to the matter at hand. I have an 86 RX7 in nice condition but after sitting a few years (it ran great when put into storage) it has low power and after it idles for 2 minutes the cat converter glows cherry red. Not the manifolds or other exhaust parts, just the converter. Also, the front rotor burns the plugs nice and clean, but the rear one burns dirty. I already have done all the tune up kind of stuff and added good fuel and injector cleaner to the gas. It will start fine, very little smoke upon start up and red lines easy, it just won't go over 60 mph and dies going up a hill. Any clues. THe exhuast comes out the tailpipes strong and hot so I doubt the converter is clogged but I will try a straight pipe. I really like this car and would love to drive it some more. It has 153K miles on it but it was taken good care of its entire life. Body, trans and interior are so sweet that I would consider a new engine if it needs one. Bill

1st off

no.1 he could part the car off for more than $250, no.2 yes it shouldnt be public, but its the internet this isnt some local Burger King where we have to watch are language, i mean who can it offend reading profanity, you people woulcnt say anything if i came into burger king and say to someone else f@$&^ you, t then again it is the internet and you do have te right to say something (we say more (wheather it be swearing or standing for a cause behind computers) no.3 my cars cats where glowing red, had no idea why, i replaced the main cat and my whole exhaust got red, to the mufflers... i tested spark and my leading were only sparking half the time, i took it to a mechanic to find everything out about it (reputable guy) He should look at it monday, but check to see if you have fire.. from what i understand the motor isnt funked up unless " it feels like a lawnmower with an unbalanced blade" =)

p.s. if you can find a RX7 with a good body/interior with the only probem being a bad engine for $200 let me know i'll take 5.
good fight, good night

The cat can glow red sometimes- not bad- means it's working.
Your car is running rich...... maybe dirty injectors in the back....
BTW- I don't know if you are comparing the low end torque to, but low end isn't the greatest anyways. I find on a stock 7, the best power is around 5000-6500 (86-88)

OK- DO A COMPRESSION TEST... it'll tell all.
Go to a shop, and even ask if you can borrow a tester for 10 minutes, and give the guy a few bucks if you have to- you can do it in the parking lot. Just take out the plugs, and TAKE OUT THE CHECK VALVE from the tester- or just play with the release button to get an estimate of the compression "bumps"
Should get 3 even bumps of at LEAST 80 lbs....
If the check valve is in, you won't see the pulses, and it'll only display the highest reading- hiding a bad apex seal.

If compression is OK, and you aren't loosing coolant, than the engine is fine.
Look for the clogged cat (pre-cats too) or bad injectors...
It's pretty hard to make wild guesses about something without doing a compression test.

That is NOT me in the picture!!!Those pix were posted by felix wankel,so if anything its HIM in those pix and not me!!! Secondly the engine is NOT blown,I said it MAY be blown!!Most likely a part ON the engine is broken, not the engine itself!! And finally kbb value on that car WITH A BLOWN ENGINE IS $2080.So for me to be asking $750 for the car then to get an ******* remark like,.."I'LL GIVE YA $250",well its gonna **** me off royal, and you did bill.
BTW bill-I wouldnt even sell u my rebuilt tranny for $250!!

Thanks for the advice guys, I will do a compression check this weekend and post the numbers. Ugly dude, why do you insist on airing your dirty laundry here, thats what PM's are for. I still don't know why you chose to reply under this post, I am seeking information not attitude. Bill

HoNdAh8rRx7LuVr,

Are you going to leave the forum once you sell your RX-7?
