Case and point.
I drop the transmission and put in an aftermarket clutch.Throw out bearing looks and sounded fine...until about 100 miles..then WHIRRRRRRRR...
Fark!..drop trans AGAIN and replace throw out bearing, and Pilot bearing.
The Moral of the story is:if you are IN there Replace the bearings and the clutch. No sense in having to drop it twice is there?

Then go buy a clutch, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing, stop debating and get to work. Sidebar, I'd replace the rear main seal while your at it as well if you didn't last put it in yourself.

Anytime I'm in there, I do the T/O bearing, pilot bearing, clutch, rear main, and trans front cover seal. We're talking dollars for the extra parts, and many problems prevented and time saved

I have the same clink. I have an 88 gxl. I've been trying to figure it out for a verry long time. Brand new clutch and bearing kit, polyurethane motor and transmission mounts, mazda reman driveshaft, welded front diff mount, solid rear diff and subframe mounts with a pinion snubber, energy suspension control arm bushins with mazdatrix rear stear eliminaters, and I have tried several transmissions. I have full custom exhaust (long tube header with 2.5" collecter, 3.5" resonater that's 14" long with 2.5" pipe going to my gp sports muffler, no split air pipe) and after all of this I still have the clink...nobody has been able to hwlp me with it. It always happens when you don't "ease" off tge clutch (which is almost never)
I have been dealining with this for too long. Sometimes it sounds like its coming from the front of the tranny and sometimes it sounds like its coming from the rear of the tranny. Im actualy in the process of a tranny swap. Mine spun a bearing. Then I bought one and it was destroyed, bought one that was freshly rebuilt and doesn't work at all and finaly found a good one. Got it all hack together and now my clutch isnt fully disengaging. The hydraulics (which are new) are qll working great. I called the part store to check the part number on my throwout bearing and seems I was given an s5 and even though they look the same they are different part number and therefore must b different.

You might have a bent fork on the pressure plate hints why it would only make the sound as soon as you let the clutch out this is usually caused by a bad release bearing ( throw out bearing)
