lost power to starter - now what did I break?
s5 turbo vert that I just installed my rebuild into. like a giddy kid I hop into the driver seat and turn the key. my grin turns to grimace as the only sound I am greeted to is the hum of the fuel pump. loud expletives and back on jack stands, I want to punch her in the face. 12v test light says I'm good so I jump it... clunk. now I'm thinking just how in the hell does my starter go bad from sitting on a shelf. turns out my TPS did though, anyone have a spare tested good for sale?
i throw the n318 in the vice, attach jumper cables and hit the switch. the wimpy little gear pops out of its shell and starts to whirl. I'm like w t f mate? its a fresh rebuild and takes a bit of effort to spin with socket wrench. so I toss it on the shelf and grab the n327 auto, you know, the one that says bad **** on it. back to the vice, power, and the manly gear bursts out of the dig like it was racing for pinks and shouts "I'm going to kick your flywheels ***!"
back to the she devil. more expletives (one man on the long bolt is not fun) hop back in thinking I'm awesome and nothing. now I jump the damn thing again and this time no click. I grab the trusty battery/alternator tester and attach the terminals. it shows me a picture of the fonz with his thumbs in the air. grumble grumble back to rolling on the floor. test light says I have no more 12v at the terminal. (key in every position) how the hell did this happen? so I ran a jumper cable from the battery to the stater and my jumper switch to the cockpit. turn key, kick clutch, push botton, and vroom.
the other odd thing is I also do not have power to the spade with the key turned. so I had 12v to the starter, swap starters and no no power. hit everything up with contact cleaner and the ground is on the bolt so I'm at a loss.
help please

Check the wire that feeds the fuse block on the engine bay.It is easy overlooked when you hook up the engihe.trust me,I did,.
it is a like vacuum tube size wire with a single connection to the Fuse Block, off the Body harness, right around the CAS and Coil area.

connection like a nut or plastic cover prong? I don't remember seeing something like that. i've been squinting through the s5 wiring digram I downloaded. i'm thankful the guy was nice enough to take all those pictures, but they look like aol jpegs. i'll search for that wire monday.
on a side note since I don't feel like making another thread. is it normal for the idle to be 2000rpm with the TPS unplugged? I don't feel like tracking down a vacuum leak...

check to make sure the anti theft circuit is not killing power to the starter. or, if the circuit is dead, wont provide power to the starter.
im pretty sure thats what it is. mine did the same thing, and all you have to do is trace that wire. it will make multiple connections, and you just bypass the one you find in the engine bay, to the one in the steering column.

Try the Positive wiring OFF the Harness to the Fuse block. It needs that Posiitive to feed the Starter and egi, headlights etc.

i've tested both sides of the fuse block and all is good. I ran a new wire from the engine harness to the 12v prong on the starter so now It will click when I turn the key. still no power to the big wire.
I have some subwoofer amp cable. if I ran that from the fuse block to the starter and just left it would that be fine? I don't know if constant 12/14v to the starter terminal is OK.
