Looking to buy an FC. Need advice.

Hey guys! As you can tell from my title im looking for an fc. Now reason being is that I want to get into autocross racing and would love to have an FC to do it in. I have been looking a a few in the area and this is one of the FCs im looking at.

http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/1356055711.html

Now it seems like a pretty good deal but what bothers me is the light switches are not working properly. He says someone told him a new cpu will fix it.?? Is this true? Another thing is he has an extra wiring harness. If the wiring harness needed to be changed would this be a pretty hard thing to do? Also would the light switched not working be a sign of electrical problems to come?

Im not looking for anything real fancy just a decent 7. With the issues with this car would it be worth it?

Ideally you'll prolly want an FC w/ a few less issues to start with, electrical issues are some of the most tedious to solve...unless of course you're an electrician or something in which case that might not be a bad choice

You should have a look at Aaron Cake's excellent Second Gen RX-7 Buyer's guide, if you haven't already:

http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/buy1.htm

In the ad, the guy says he blew a water pump recently. If the car was overheated, there may be serious problems with the engine internally, which would make this a car to avoid unless you're interested in attempting a rebuild. It does sound like this particular car has a fair number of issues, but if you could get it for $600 or $700, it might be worth the risk, assuming you are willing and able to fix all the broken stuff. Just don't get in over your head.

Yeah im a bit leery about electrical issues. Mechanical issues I can pretty much handle. Seems like most of the FCs I find have some kind of small electrical issue. I have a daily so the car will not be driven everyday, just more like a long awaited project. Theres another FC im lookig at that is completely redone but its around 3500. I don't think I really want to spend that much on a car I plan on having as a project.

Yeah the blown water pump did disturb me as well, But i am interested in rebuilding anyway so i dunno. I know what ever car I get will have some issues which does not bother me. My only thing is finding one lith the least amount which im finding to be very hard to do. I have check out a buyers guide but I don't think it was that one. Ill check it out now.

You can't tell much without checking it in person. Check out a buyer's guide from a link in the FAQ or google one. It may also help to have a mechanic check it out. A car with lots of problems often is not worth it in the long run even if you get it for free; best to not buy a lemon and pay more later. Try www.kbb.com for the blue book value, i.e. average sale price.

To clear a flood simply press the gas pedal all the way down and crank it a bit to clear the flood. Then release the pedal and crank it to start. Repeat if necessary. Let the starter motor cool down for a minute between repeated attempts (after the 2nd or 3rd try at least), or you may burn it out. It's so simple I'm surprised the owner doesn't know this (but some don't) and I wonder if the problem is really something else. If you can't get the car to a condition where you can check it out and make sure it's in decent shape before getting stuck with it, I'd just walk away.

+1 What Daviddeep said.

Also, light switches burning up are a known problem in these cars, so that actually wouldn't worry me. May need to replace the light switch and/or plug that goes to it. The switch circuit is designed such that too much current runs through it (no relay for the parking lights), and that, coupled with dirt/corrosion at the bulb sockets, causes problems. A fix to avoid further problems is to wire in a relay to the parking light circuit. See archives. Also read up in the stickies at the top of this section.

As far as the whole water pump and overheating thing - have the guy start up the car, with the thermostat cap off (some cars also have a rad cap at the top of the rad - I'm not talking about this one). You should not see tiny bubbles. I'm not talking air bubbles from air trapped after a coolant change for example. I'm talking about bubbles from the compression cycles leaking past housing coolant seals. Youtube has videos of this. Search "bubbles coolant rx-7 rotary champagne bubbles" something like that. Also have the car compression tested. More info around here.

Edit: Icemarks headlight fix (Icemark passed away - he was THE guy with anything electrical):

Thanks for the info guys, yall are a great help on this site! Yeah I plan on taking a look at it today. Fom the research I have been doing I know some of the main things to check for, For example the tiny bubbles. As far as the light switch goes im not to worried. I don't think its the whole harness and not to mention my buddy has an extra switch in his garage. If the guy doesn't have it to a where I can really check it out ill pass on it. I want to make a smart decision with the 7 i choose.

Thanks for posting the links pfsantos, ill have to take a look at it once I get home.

Thinking hard about the 7 that cost 4000. Everything about this car is clean. Heres the link to it.

http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/1345292580.html

He is actually a member on here and has great knowledge on 7s and his car proves it. This is the one im really shooting for but saving money while going to college full time is proving to be a hard task. Getting discouraged but like ericgrau said "best to not buy a lemon and pay more later".

Well got a look at the rx7. From what I can see he has a lot of work done to it. It has dings but nothing serious. Has little rust in the common areas but nothin worth worrying about. The only thing is the headlights. He has two new switched and a new harness which brings me to a question for you guys. Does the CPU control the lights??
