Lateral Link installation ?

When reinstalling a rear lateral link, the FSM says I need a couple of tools to do the job. It says I nedd to preload the ball joint on the subframe side of the link. Is there any way to do this without the tool listed? How important is doing that step? Can it be skipped or will it affect the balance of the suspension?

And also, I have not found any info in any manual that says the right and left are different. Is this true, there is just a trailing arm and a subframe side correct?
