Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 any opinions?
I need a new set of tires and I'm looking for something high grip that will last a good number of miles. If anyone has any experience with this tire, and more specifically, this tire on a TII any knowledge would be appreciated. I'm most worried about the life of the tire. Note, this is for daily driving (sometimes spirited) and perhaps a couple autocrosses next summer. Thanks in advance.

Pretty good tires for the price. They don't have the max grip, but are predictable at the limit. Wet handling and resistance to hydoplaning is pretty good on the stock width, but wet braking is a little bit lacking. I've run 15k or so on mine, mostly highway and spirited driving and tehy have well over 50% tread left. This is on an NA though, so your mileage may vary . Hmmm. Dry is pretty decent, wet, decent...... snow?? NO. If price/wear is an issue I'd look at the Yok's AVS ES100's. They road tested better than the 712's for a couple more bucks each. They'll probably be my next tires.

I really liked the 712's now i had them on a honda accord in 205/50/17 inch....They served my for 45k before the wear bars showed and i autocrossed them every other weekend! Great deal for the money.

I use them as my daily driver/autocross tire on my NA. They served me well, but i think i am going to go with the Azenis (however you spell that) next season. If its really cold or snowing, forget about the 712's. Even if the road is dry, if its cold i have little traction when pushed.

I've noticed that they need to warm up a bit before they start getting really sticky. I like them. They are indeed predictable as stated earlier however I'm running a very well modded n/a and I can spin them all day at 225/50/16 on Rota slipstreams. I think it has alot to do with the wheels being VERY light (12-13lbs each). I'm kinda worried now cause i'm doing a t2 swap over the winter and i'm trying to imagine how i'm going to hook up with about 90-100 more hp.

the yokohama es100 is around same price and imo a better tire.

They are decent tires, really good dry weather traction. I was kinda dissapointed when I drove them in downpour yesterday, and the tires have about 10,000 miles on them.
In the rain, they are ok at speed, but slowing down and trying to make turns isn't very outstanding.

I use the 712's on my Jza70 ( heavier car more TQ then the avg 13B) THe softer sidewalls compliment the stiffer susension i run , it allows for the micro bumps to be absorbed without throwing the suspension into fits. the softer sidewalls are predictable in corners and give you ample warning before they let go. THe one drawback IS the sift sidewalls, they are mostly kevlar and can be cut down fairly easily.. as all season performance tyres they are a great buy for the money..
I use the 711's on my S5 daily they are a 3 season only tyre compared to the 712 but I find that once they heat up they can be tossed around and have good control in both grip and drift modes.. it is a dated compound ad in wet/cool ontario weather they are next to useless, the newer MX would be the way to go for that , but i think on MI roads.. you'd be better off with a yokohama tyre.. thier compaund is a bit more resistant to crap road conditions..

A good friend of mine just put them on his WRX and he doesn't like them much, but they have a nice tread wear. He just came from SO-3s.. Said they don't stil even half what the Potenzas do for grip, so if you have ever felt those then you might be able to compare..

I don't want to spend 400 on tires and have them fry in 15,000 miles. Anyone know how long the Yokohamas last on average?

I love my SP9000s on my other vehicle, they are pretty damn sticky and I put about 12000 miles on them this summer. The rears are about 40% tread left and front are about 75%.
The rears are just worked form a really high gear ratio I run, I fry them all the time.. No burnouts. But you should be able to get about 25K miles on them.
Yokohama AVS will not last as long as the 712s, just check the treadwear rating. A guy in my SCCA runs the AVS on his Supra and he has to get new tires every summer.
"high grip that will last a good number of miles"
That's the problem. The stickier the tire, usually the lower the treadwear, but not always. Like the SO-3 is super sticky, but has a nice treadwear compared to other tires of the same performance. But you pay for those tires. I think TireRack wanted 250/each for 275/40/17s...ouch, I got the SP9000s instead.
You really gotta weigh your driving habbits. How many miles can you afford to get off a set of tires. If you can't afford to get tires but maybe every 30K+ miles, then you should get the 712s. There is no one perfect tire for everybody.

I have 712's on my CRX. I have had them on for about 7,000 miles, the fronts are almost gone(like 20%) and the rears are about 50%. They seemed to wear really rapidly, which surprised me. I don't burn out that often, maybe a little spirited driving. They have OK traction, but my old GT qualifiers handled about as well. I wouldn't buy 712's again. just my $.02
