Just test drove '90 Vert

My buddy told me there was a 'vert for sale up near where we live.. So I stop by to check it out today, armed with my brand new digi camera... I shoulda got shots of the inside/under the hood, but i didn't for some reason... The engine bay was the cleanest for any road car i've ever seen.. i really wish I had gotten pics of it.

Well.. This was the first dealership EVER that didn't swarm in on me... Kinda got me worried after a while.. I actually have to GO IN and ask for the key to it.. I fire that mug up, and a *HUGE* cloud of blue smoke comes out the tailpipes, and up in the hood that I've opened.. My car blows a lil after sitting, but dayyyyum! Another hugeass cloud happened after revving it up to 6k for a few seconds...

The interior is "decent", except for the seats, which have huge tears in them. The top wouldn't go all the way down, but got stuck in the stage right before the last piece folds down. Spare tire is missing. Aluminum hood. Several rips in the hood (pics in a bit)

Anyway...i did drive it.
The clutch is GONE. more than ~10% throttle in 4th or 5th lets it spin freely..

It idles oddly.. The idle changes depending on what gear you're in, EVEN WHEN THE CLUTCH IS PRESSED. very odd.

I had never driven a S5 before, but i know they have that VDI business... I felt NOTHING kick in at any times.. no kick for the 6p, no kick for the VDI. Honestly, power devilery wasn't peaky at all... very smooth...up until 7k, at which time it lost all power... having it floored it 2nd at 7k slooooowly made it up to ~7300, at which time I just gave up..

But.....It's reeeeeal slow... My 88 gxl is NOT a fast car, but it sure felt like it as I drove home from the lot.. hmmm... I know the verts are heavier and all...but DAMN. Prolly clogged cats or something.

All in all, it's prolly not a bad lil car, but all the little things turned me off for it.. By the time I had started it, i was sure i wasn't even interested, but just wanted a test drive.. I didn't even note the mileage..

hmm..

Blue smoke may mean a coolant seal leak. Looks like the top & side modlings need to be replace.

What's the compression numbers on the engine?

Once you figure out the final cost to repair you'd probably want to offer him less.

The slipping clutch could be masking the VDI. The smoke should lower the price. Offer $2000 out the door and see what they say..

You do know that the last stage of the top going down, is you getting out of the car and pressing in that lil button and folding it down yourself; right!

I was thinking it had to be something manual.. It worked well up until then.. I got out and tried to get it down, but I couldn't figure it out..hehe

It's not a BAD deal, but not a great deal either. Book on that car (in perfect shape) is close to $10k. Sounds like the oil control seals are going bad... and needs a clutch. Rebuilt engine ~$3000 installed, ~$500 for repairing the dent in the drivers door, ~$1000 for a new top (perhaps more) $500 for the clutch installed, you're at $7500 which would be a decent price for that car in good shape. You could do all of those items yourself and save quite a bundle though.

I wouldn't mind buying it at that price. I don't need another one though.

Wow.. that's rough... Too bad you couldn't take my car for a ride.... now THAT's what you call peaky! (I must admit- it's getting pretty damn fast though... havn't lost to a Stang yet of any year since the last bunch of mods..)

I still think about 500 less would be better....
Engine sounds shot....

I just paid $7500 for a near-mint '88 convertible, and saw two in pretty good shape for around $4~$5000..... You can do a lot better than this if you shop around and are patient.

Yeah.. When my friend mentioned that it was at 2600$, i was thinking that a 2000$ offer is reasonable.. I can't really afford another car, and i don't really need one... but if it was in pretty good shape, and i didn't have to put a lot of time into it, a 2000$ investment is a pretty good deal for something that I see going for 5000+$ every day..

Ah well.. maybe next time.

You don't need the whole thing, you only need the rear section replaced unless you are going with cloth.
