Just bought an S5 and have a question...

Hi all,
I just today bought a 90 GXL (years ago used to have a 86 rx7) and of course I found some issues that I didn't notice when I looked at it.

1) The aftermarket cd player/radio works....until you turn on the parking lights and/or headlights then it completely cuts out and has no power. I noticed the warning lights dimmed as well when this happened (seat belt light was on).

2) This may sound light an idiotic question but bare with me. The door will lock from the inside but you can still open it like its unlocked from the outside.

3) The alarm mysteriously went off after I parked the car. I didn't even know it had an alarm. After a few minutes of it going off I pulled a fuse and it went off. I called the previous owner and he said "just unlock the passenger door and open it". Now I'm one that likes to know how things work and should this alarm situation worry me?

Any ideas on the above issues? I would greatly appreciate it! I'll post some pics of the 7 as well. It needs some body work but overall I love it.

You disarm the alarm by unlocking either door, or by unlocking the hatch. Note that trying to put the keys in the ignition will not disarm the alarm system.

The alarm goes off when one of these conditions is met:
1. Hood is opened.
2. Either door is unlocked from the inside.
3. I think when the hatch is opened from the inside. My hatch release cable is broken, so I can't verify this.

If your alarm is going off mysteriously, I would take a meter to items such as your door lock switches and check operation via the FSM in the Body Electrical Section. There's actually a pretty good procedure of checking the operation of the Theft Deterrent System in the FSM.

the reason why your door still opens from the outside and prolly why the po told u to use the passanger door is because your driver door lock is broken and the reason why your alarm went off is because your driver door lock is most likley broken.

ie the alarm got a bad signal from it and thought someone was breaking in and went off.

and your radio and lights are messed up because its a 20 year old neglected car and the wiring is all messes up trace it down and find the problem. prolly somthing shorting out

and welcome to the world of what happened to my rx7 now?

my alarm does the same thing unless you lock it from the outside so try that from now on...

Thanks for all the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I am trying to turn this into my daily driver so I'm just trying to fix her up before I put it on the road full time.

I should mention that I did go ahead and put it on ebay to see if I can make some extra cash off of it (along with selling my other car) to see if maybe I can find another Rx7 in the $6k range. But if it doesn't sell no biggie.

I forgot how much I love how these cars feel on the road.

Looks like a nice car. It reminds me of my 91 coupe - which I would still have if it wasn't for some low class thieves.

Anyhow, if you are willing to spend $6k on an FC, you should be able to get a pristine car, turbo or normally aspirated. Good luck in the search.
