Joining the ranks
3 years ago I was schooled by some guys I met about the power of the RX-7. I had been obsessing about getting myself a sporty car all my life and I finally decided to do it. So I almost drove myself into poverty trying to find a way to afford an RX-8. After months of finacial hell I realised..."I want an RX-7"! So at last I have bought one. 1988 White convertable, a few after market accessories. Okay, so I have a question. What should I use to clean and protect the convertable cover? Is there anything that I should do to this car right away to keep it nice for the winter.

You should always do the general stuff when you buy a new car, complete tune up, plugs, etc. I'm not sure about the top, as i'm not a rag-top guy myself, but i can tell you for protection for winter: Wax it heavily, and try to keep the salt off it (if possible).

I can't help you with the convertible cover; I don't know what you should use to protect it. Search the internet, I suppose there will be ample info. out there on what to use.
You should be concerned about the rest of the body too. Here's what I did when I bought my car. People always ask me where I got my car repainted and how it looks like a factory job etc. It's original paint, that's why it looks factory.
i) strip all old residue & wax off with a wash formula designed to do so (not sure who makes this product, but there's alot of them out there)
ii) use a clay bar at this point if you feel it would help and your car has lots of little specs and grime embedded
iii) bring the paint back; use www.automagic.com "Awesome Gloss", it's a wax/cleaner/polymer that'll revitalize your original paint. Use it on all the lights and lenses too, it's very good as a polishing compound.
iv) seal the car by protecting it with a quality paste type carnuba wax www.autopia-carcare.com/
