John V's STS GTUs build thread

Correct, it uses this board
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...v22-p-381.html
The DIY-PNP kit is still unusable though since it cannot control the s5 omp or emissions and the connector is too wide for the case.

I know you cannot remove the vam per the rules, besides if you did you would have to install a new IAT elsewhere. Certain sensors like the vam and the narrow range tps are not used with megasquirt and can be theoretically removed if classing allows.
EDIT: Rule D1 states "Reprogrammed ECU may be used in the standard housing." This means Megasquirt is completely out of the question anyways it seems.

There are STS guys in Miatas that are running MS in a stock Miata case. I haven't personally inspected them, but I'm told they've been scrutinized and are legal.
The RTek is OK, but I know I'm giving up resolution using it.

Quick update.
Looks like I'm going a little bit of a different direction with my suspension setup. What I have now isn't bad, but isn't ideal for an STS car.
With some help from a few suspension experts I race with, I'll be changing the dampers out and experimenting with some different spring rates and ride heights. I'll have the ability to run the front end higher, improving the geometry. And with the new dampers, I'll get the high shaft speed force down into a more usable range on street tires.
So if anyone is interested in a really low mileage Ground Control race coilover setup, let me know. I have the dyno plots for the shocks that I'm happy to share with anyone who wants to buy the setup. :-)

are you going softer on spring rates and raised rise height?
love your thread, I have a 89 GTUs too.

I'll get cracking on the suspension in the offseason. Soon.

I am try to guess what direction your suspension set up is going, since you already tried the low ride height with stiff spring rate which i assumed you think can be improve.
i am guessing you don't like the camber curve and R/C on FC once it is that low?
do you mind PM your shock dyno graph?

good to know things are back on track.

I'm not happy with the shocks. I think they're way too stiff. If I spend money on anything in the offseason, it'll be for different front dampers.

i really enjoy your thread on the sts build. i was competing in sts, but since i did a 6 port turbo build i am now in sm. I'm using some of your info and refining my set up. good luck next season.
#364
I lied. I spent money on something in the off season - another set of Keizer wheels! I plan to pick up a set of 225/45/15 Toyo R1Rs to run at cooler events. Not cheap, but worth it.
Going to be sending off some work to a local machine shop - new rear camber adjusters of our own design
Oh, yeah - and new shocks.

I currently have a setup from Ground Control with Koni single adjustable "street" shocks all around. I have no issue with the spring perches or camber plates but I don't like the shocks so they've got to go.
#368
There is nothing wrong with them, but I want to upgrade to the big piston shocks so I can have them revalved to get more digression. They're still far better than any of the off the shelf Chinese crap that most RX-7 owners put on their car. They're just not ideal for someone who wants a no-expense-spared competition damper.
If you want to buy the shocks I have now, they only have one season worth of events on them. Then all you'd need are the GC housings and camber plates. just shoot me a PM.

There is nothing wrong with the sport shocks, lots of the ITS guys use them. I just want a little more tweakability.

The standard GC setup uses an 8641 Sport front and an 8041 Sport rear shock. I picked up a set of big-piston race shocks for the front and rear because I want more range for revalving.

are the race shocks you got longer? I remember you trying to get longer ones at some point. Also, are they double adjustable? the koni race shocks look nice, but a little too expensive for my wallet the ones I've seen are $400 each
#372
Yes, double adjustable 8611s. They aren't cheap, but it will give me a couple more things to play with.
I didn't end up getting longer ones. Until I take the car to FP I'll just live with the lowered roll centers and band-aid it.
