My Jspec had good compression, but the coolant seals were on their way out... If I were to do it over, I would have just rebuilt my original motor. Oh well, I got a nicely sized turbo with my Jspec .

That's interesting to know whether jspecs are worth it or not, since I may need a rebuild soon... after I do a compression test.

Not sure if this helps but heres how my expereince looking for a jspec went:

Nippon Motors- Called and they said they had 2 in and compression #'ers are usually around 70-80psi I dont know but that seems a little lower then what i'd like.

Toysport- Only had a 20B

Japan Direct- only had a shortblock rebuilt for 1550. They dont think they'll be receiving very many S4/S5 engines anymore because its becoming more and more difficult to find usuable/sellable blocks.

FC3S.org-Spoke and met up with Dave, really helpful guys with some excellent products. Only thing keeping me from buying is they're a bit iffy on what accessories are included which is beyond their control.

corksport- Ive dealt with these guys before picking up other products from them and it was excellent service but I think purchasing a jspec with no warranty is too much of a risk for me at this point.

swapjdm.com- Again, cool guys but they say its difficult to get a hold of a S4 block because of its age.........

C & T Intl- called them a couple times. They were unsure of their inventory and finally said they had none in stock.

Libero USA- good price but only had a start up warranty. They were willing to do compression testing in front of me.

Well finally I found a supplier and will be picking up my engine tomorrow morning. They offer a 6 month warranty so that was a bit relieving. They're gonna comp. test the two motors they have and I'll take the one with higher compression.

If you don't want to go with the RISK of a J-SPEC or worrie about havin to install 3 different J-Spec motors. I would save your money and buy a MAZDA remain. $2200
dollars but WELL worth it in my opinion. 1yr warranty. and what ever you do not go threw HAYES ROTARY. my buddy went threw 4 engines on his s4 T2 within 8months. They never idiled low on compression. The MAZDA one started right up and runs beautiful.

I am still waiting for my J-spec motor to be shipped over. I chose to use "Japanese engine Inc." in Tacoma, Wa. I talked to the guys at the auto crafts shop here on post, and that was who the reccomended. As well as a few other friends with J-spec swaps. They offer a 30k mi warrenty against anything, but only on the block. As they will not warrenty the accs bolted to the block. Motor set me back $749 (because I am local, and picking up) I will know as soon as the container comes in from Japan.

Another good thing about using a local supplyer, he is gettin in 10 motors, I get to choose mine. He also does his own comp testing.

edit:
I am also only going with this j-spec because the front rotor is completly blown in my current S4 13bt. I am installing the J-spec to get my daily driver back on the road, while the current motor is at Atkin's getting worked over. I just don't make enough to drop $2500 all at once for a rebuild, but >$800 is doable with the warrenty.

If they offer a 30k warranty on the block against anything then I think everyone on this forum would be all over that. smells fishy. but good luck

My jspec runs great, got it from fc3s.org, s5 don't know compression but it handles boost like a real man ( unlike me ). Even ran it out lean past 20AFR (wideband) not under boost though.

Well guys, I picked up a motor yesterday morning.

It was from Japanese Engine Land (JEL) in Stanton, CA. The engine tested at 120psi per chamber Came with an excellent warranty also (compared to others). Good guys to deal with and very professional.

If you want anymore information on them, send me a PM or I'll just post it when im back from school.

I was able to negotiate with them a bit because of some circumstances we were working around but you can expect to pay anywhere from 800-1000.

www.rotaryworks.com

Their site is being updated right now, but email jabbasland@aol.com

That's where I got my J-Spec from. It was GREAT doing business with him. He sent me pictures of the engine and everything. I even got to hear the compression chugs over the phone. lol

I got a s4 shortblock, and everything else that bolted onto it was s5, including the Turbo.

I got it for 1200 shipped to my door. That was including all the labor.

I would HIGHLY recommend whoever is looking for a Jspec to Email him.

I got one from them , about a year or so back.

The motor I had was very clean, and complete , all the way down to the STARTER! It had everything...

Never rebuilt it, but I did swap out the tiny twin turbos for a bigger single and the guy that took them apart said they were in pretty good shape, hed have to guess they were low mileage...
Anyways, I have a rotary engine compression tester and the compression on this motor was about 100 on all 3 sides of both rotors....

Id really recommend getting a motor from dave, and checking it as soon as you get it. That way you can do something about it , if you have to...

Anyways, Ive only put 600 miles or so on this motor, but they werent sunday drive miles I can asure you, several runs at over 16 psi

correct me if I'm wrong...aren't all Jspec motors 13BT's? If you could manage to get the ECU and other assorted parts necessary, those would make for cheap turbo swaps for people like me with our poor slow N/A verts
