ive got a strange electrical problem
well its tough to explain whats going on but i will try to do my best. also wanted to include that i tried using the search function, but came up with wayy to many unrelated results.
so, when i turn my car(87 GXL) off and pull the key out the radio turns off then turns back on and just stays on. i can turn it off and on via power button, but the power button its self stays lit up. one thing i noticed is if i plug my gps unit into the cig lighter socket, it(radio) will shut off and stay off. but i cannot turn on the gps(with out the key in acc or on pos.) i was thinking to my self, how the hell could this happen? at first i thought it might have been the key hole not registering the off position. but i then figured out thats not the problem because the cig lighter doesnt work with the key "off." now my only guess is there is something going on with the +12 v constant interfering with the +12 v switched. does anyone else have any input before i tear into my center console? any ideas of anything else it could be? i would really like to avoid taking the radio surround off cause i dont wanna risk breaking any of the pastics.
thanks
*edit* forgot to mention that it only does this some of the time. most of the time the radio will just shut off like it should and stay off.

Stock radio gets powered by the ACC buss on the interior fuse box.
ACC buss is only powered if the key is in ACC........or ON.
ACC is not powered with key OFF.
Either your key is not going to OFF and is staying in ACC or the radio is miswired.
ACC is the positon of the key just prior to all the way counterclockwise positon.
Make sure your key is all the way counterclockwise.
Your cigar lighter not working when you have the key OFF does indicate you key is not being left in ACC. Cigar is off the ACC buss also.
Tell you what, next time it acts up, just sort of wiggle the ignition key and see if the radio goes off. Might just be igniton switch sticking related or heavy key chain related.

ok awesome, thank you hailers. you confirmed my suspects of the problem. next time it starts acting up like this ill make sure to jiggle the key around, and ill try to remember to record it with my phone. ill also try to pull the acc fuse when it acts up again. ill report back with the results and video.
...hell since im bored and have 2 hours to kill before work, im gonna go out there and see if i can get it to act up again.

At one time I had a wiper problem. They would not work right away but after a while they would.
It turned out to be tooooo many keys on the ignition. I'd go to START which disabled the IG2 fuse buss (where the wiper fuse is) and ACC buse busses in the interior, which is NORMAL, but then when the car started and the key was returned to ON.........well it never quite made it back to ON from START until the key was wiggled to let the guts of the switch make its way to ON.......which now cause IG2 and ACC to have power once more and the wipers to work. Make sense? Yes.
FYI. Going to START disables all the interior fuses except those needed for starting the car (IG1 fuse buss). Once the key returns to ON, then all the interior fuses are powered.

ok, thanks for the info thats good to know. if pulling the acc fuse next time it acts up doesnt do the trick, then ill turn the key to start and see if that has any effect.
i was just outside for a few minutes and couldnt get it to act up again. so with me being very irish and the car parked in direct sunlight i wanted to take a break for a little while. ill go back out there in a few and try to get it to do it again.

sorry i forgot to update this thread. my car is still acting up. it still has the radio problem as described as before. it also has a new problem, but first let me say what i did about the first problem. i went into the dash and checked all the wires and they seem good, no loose connections and no exposed wires. i tried to remember which wires the +12v switched and the +12v constant were hooked to, but i was fairly busy last week and i forgot. i will probably check into that tomorrow. now on to my other strange electrical problem that is also tied into this.
my "door" light in the idiot cluster will stay slightly lit up even though all of the doors are closed firmly. when i press "power" on the radio the door light will light up fully for a second, then go back to being slightly lit up. i made a video of this about a week ago...
please excuse the mess in my car as i was using it as a daily for a while.![Smilie](https://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
