Ive got a question related to an intermittent fuel smell. I dont think its my pd.

Hey everyone, ive got an 88 vert thats bone stock and still uses the omp however i also add premix just to play it safe. My question is that every now and then i get an intermittent fuel smell and i know the pd is usually the culprit but i looked at mine and from what searching ive done gathered that if it fails there should be fuel on the motor. I looked at mine tonight after i got the smell and it looks just fine and the motor is bone dry and clean just like it has always been. I dont see any moist spots or fuel or anything like that. So heres my question. About 2 months ago i put a new clutch in and ever since then ive been battling a minor exhaust leak comming from either in front of the cats or behind them ( havent taken the time to figure it out yet as it comes and goes). Can a minor exhaust leak create what smells like fuel? I dont see any fuel or wetness whatsoever and everything looks like it should. My fuel mileage has stayed the exact same( about 260-275 miles to a tank) and the thing runs just as good as it always has despite the minor exhaust leak that comes and goes. I wasnt too worried about the exhaust leak as i plan to replace it all soon but i wanted to make sure theres not something im failing to see when i look everything over. Since i found no fuel anywhere i figured the only thing wrong with the car that im aware of anyway could be the cause( the exhaust leak) so thats my question. Oh and the smell has come and gone too mabe 2 or 3 times and its after casual driving, no hotrodding. In fact if i drive it hard it doesnt smell of fuel at all. Again this is why i wondered if it could be the exhaust leak causing it. Anyways yalls suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks, Karson
