interior question and porting question

First i would like to add that my search isnt working but on to buisness i had two question in general. my first question was:

i wanted to know all the instuments that are on the left hand side of the steering wheel because my car was gutted and i dont have the instruments for that side,

second:

i wanted to know now porting effects the timeing of the rx7. does it mess with the the timing? because one of my auto peeps told me that takeing metal from the houseing is bad and he told me to just smooth the walls till they felt like glass, i mean he kept saying to make all the ports smooth and "swooshy" i think he ment that it all when together smoothly no sharp turns in the ports of nothin.

[i am thinking about streetporting and he told me not to and to do the stuff above.]

Porting usually does effect the timing. It could b possible someone barely porting to not effect timing, but that would have to be very minor porting.

The left side is for the headlights, and turn signal

as far as porting is concerned, you need to PM Karack and ask him. Porting is essentially taking metal from the irons/housings. How else would you be able to enlarge the ports?

Left side has the rear defrost button, manual light button, and the regular headlight switch.

Porting is a combination of porting the heads and putting on a high-profile cam. Are either of these a bad thing? I all depends....
A moderate streetport will have no bad effects at all if done properly and can yield a noticeable increase in power. Nothing huge, but you can feel it.
The more extreme forms of porting (bridge, peripheral) are generally only recommended for track cars since they adversely effect longevity and driveability.

to get you gotta give is the simple truth about porting, there is no such thing as porting that does not reduce power to gain power, you are changing the transition, though so small of a change in the low end the benfits up top usually are more noticable.

smooth porting is a touchy subject here and even in piston engine technology as people have tried to duke it out for years each side saying one or the other is superior. in my opinion both sides are fighting a losing battle, the gains from smooth porting are so small it is not worth screwing with, same goes for roughing the port paths with a burr by 'knurling' the walls, this is airflow not water flow... do the port style that you want and don't let anyone tell you one is superior because it isn't.

choosing the port size is the main concern, larger intake and exhaust ports allow the airflow in and out quicker, which means more top end power and peak horsepower but you will lose airflow velocity which means less torque, torque can be regained by increased compression though.

increasing the compression yields a lower threshold for detonation and preignition though so in tuning terms higher compression is less forgiving when errors are made but yields better numbers more easily than low compression.

both compression and porting do not directly affect ignition timing, at all! however timing changes should be made to bring out the full potential of the engine and every engine build is different so saying you need to advance your timing "X" degrees does not apply as every persons porting is different as well as their air fuel tuning curve and then there is the timing split between leading and trailing spark plugs to take into account too... in short, timig changes should only be done by a profession with the proper tools and knowledge of these engines, leaving the timing at base where it is for stock applications is fine for most applications though so no need to get too worried about it.
