Intake Temp Gauge - Observations TMIC

So, I installed an Intake Temp gauge in the rubber hose after the TMIC.

Drove 2.5 hours with it first and noticed this. Outside temp was prob around 30C. While driving around 65mph and no boost the temps stayed around 40C.

The moment you get on boost past 3psi it goes up to about 50C. After the boosting it drops down rather fast. Around town it doesn't heat soak that bad.

At the autox it would go up to about 75C after a 45 second run. I would then pop the hood and it would drop back down to 40C with the hood open and the car ideling.

On day two of the autox I threw a bag of ice on it between runs. I got the temps down to 25C before the run but it still ended up around 75C after the run. And you sure could tell that that IC was chilled for the begining part of the run.

On the way home I was sustaining 90-100 in places to see how it did with constant boost. I was using about 3psi to stay at those speeds in 5th gear. The intake temps stayed at 50C and would not cool.

This all leads me to ponder how well water injection would assit the TMIC.

Water injection = good
Stock topmount = not so good

Ok..... aerodynamics are a funny thing... at 90-100 MPH, the air might actually be skipping OVER your intake scoop or the pressure building up inside the intake may be forming a wall in the tunnel. I don't know.. What i DO know is that the TMIC is an adequate IC for the stock TII.

However, after you start modding the car, one of the first things to go should be the TMIC.

Water injection is something to try AFTER you upgrade your intercooler. Its not going t be as affective with the TMIC simply because the TMIC sucks!!

You COULD rig up a sprayer for your TMIC.. however, whatever you spray on is going to get onto your engine as well!

That's an often overlooked issue that's much improved with a front air dam.

I would think if the scoop didn't work it would not stabilze at 50C nor would it cool down at that speed.

I believe water injection with that Autospeed intelligent IC sprayer could work.

has anyone ever installed water injection on the top mount ...

and if so whats the cost/labor/effectivness ratio??

or would it be less work / cheaper to just go front mount?

I disagree. It's perfectly fine for stock vehicles. My testimonial: http://www.geocities.com/jeffguilfoil/tmic.html

Wankel7 what intake setup do you have?

It may work fine on a car with close to or stock power levels. I wouldn't dare use it to autoX, even with stock power levels. You heat soak like crazy between runs, even if your hood is popped, and your pushing your car....

Anyhow if you turn the boost up forget it. The stock top mount works fine if you use the stock intake setup or something that sees close to ambient intake temps.

I use the haltech gm unit and my fluke meter has one.

Haltech E6K
Built 13BT motor
H-trim compressor upgrade on S5 turbo and turbo exhaust manifold

Ambients 20C max, average 15C.
Speeds up to 220kph or about 130mph.

Haltech E6K showed a max of 105F under sustained boost.
Under highway cruise, air temps are around 50C to 60C, which is close to ambient.
This is not bad.

Under sustained boost, the FMIC will significantly superior, of course.
Sorry for the metric / SAE units.

I bought a used Omori gauge off of ebay.

I forgot to mention with the numbers I said in my first post I was pushing 13psi at autox
