Intake system questions

I am planning on removing the the stock air box and using a free flow filter and cold air box. What happens when i remove the maf or whatever that is the wiring harness goes into? can the car run without that plugged in? So what I am asking you is how the hell do you put a filter in the car without fing up the way it runs. any help will be great. also, removal of the air pump...is it worth doing and if so what are the steps?

thanks

You can't toss the AFM/MAF unless you get a standalone ECU...

Basically, you're just replacing the box.

It wouldn't run...I'm thinking it wouldn't start with the AFM unplugged.

i dont think theres an intake system custom made to fit FCs like the typhoon or whatever. there are a number of good aftermarket filters though if thats what you mean.

That "adapter thing" is a plate that mounts to the front of the AFM, and recieves a cone filter. That is pretty much all you can do, without a full standalone ECU to get rid of the MAF. Your car will not run at all without the MAF.

out cars use the plunger type mass air sensor, and that drastically reduces the the flow, unlike hondas and such who have flapper type sensors, it is very difficult to make much of a difference like it would on a honda... thus not viable to produce to make proffit! It is sad to say but you will HAVE To get a stand alone to ditch it!

Actually only the S5 cars use the plunger style, the S4 have the flapper door MAF, and therefore he needs that adapter. On the S5 you can just fit a cone over the MAF itself..

Yup, just use a filter with a 2.5" neck.

If your keeping your cat, keep the airpump. Of course this has been debated somewhat recently.

Any visual emissions inspection in TN? In most of VA, they don't probe ya, just look for a cat and airpump.

I'm constantly amazed by the number of people who think the ECU would be happy losing its primary load sensor...

S4's have a moving vane (or flap) AFM, S5's have a sliding cone AFM (basically the same thing arranged differently) and Hondas don't have an AFM at all. They use a manifold pressure sensor instead.
