Intake Idea

Current my Intake Air temps are right around 120 F cruising and 100 or so In boost. I do have a front mount on the nearly stock hybrid turbo but I would really like to bring the air temps down another 10 degrees. In the current location, aluminum piping about 2 feet from turbo my filter is hot to the touch.

Its a simple idea and I am sure it has been done many times before. But I simply want to have my intake routed to the area in the passenger fender in front of the front wheel. This would be a simple task about another 2 foot of straight piping and gentle 90 degree bend then straight down to the filter.

My question is does anyone have any real life experience that would support that this would help lower intake temps, and or that the added piping would just add restriction. I did something very similar on my previous turbo vehicle (Saab) and it seemed to of helped the intake air temps slightly but that was on a stock crappy intercooler.

Any additional comments? Any other minor modifications to bring the IAT down sufficiently?

Well, by relocating your intake outside of the engine bay, you lose the engine bay heat (which you have stated and we all know to be very hot). The "Cold Air Intake" is always welcomed as it pushes the intake outside of the engine bay and close to the ground where the colder air is located. The only way you will have restrictions is if any of the pipes have anything not smooth on the inside. The amount of air you will be pulling is only as thick as the smallest point in the system (Your bend most likely).
Pros: Colder air
Cons: Repairs
Closer to the ground results in rocks flying up and hitting it often. In addition to rocks, you'll have the occasional "Puddle I didn't see" incident and end up tearing the filter off the intake (Or in my case, the whole intake said bye-bye).
I'm all for it though, just beware of where of what can happen as with any other car additions!

yea I understand those problems. The filter will really not be located all that low so the rocks and water is not much of a problem. I have had filters much lower.

I am mostly just curious if and how much this would effect intake air temps. I guess I will just need to fabricate this setup and post some results.

Where is your sensor located? It's very common for the sensor to have heatsoak and give inaccurate readings. Even though the pipe is hot, the air might not be.

Relocate the air intake temp sensor inside a cold air box.

You know ali has a high thermal conductivity! hence heat surrounding the pipe can easily transfer to the air passing through the pipe.

Best thing to use is Carbon Fibre, as it has a low thermal conductivity and low internal friction. Plus its stiff.

Silicon piping to the turbo would have a low thermal conductivity, but has high internal friction. it is cheap though.

If you are going to do a cold air feed from outside car, make sure you take air from areas of high pressure, The highest pressure can be found roughly just above the nose tip of the car, around the flash to pass lens height.
