Injector seals?

Today i saw somthing that made my think? I am taking my engine out to do a rebuild, when i came to remove the injector plugs i noticed the Injector body was wet! on closer inspection i noticed when i moved them (left to right) quite a large quantity of fuel was leaking from the top seal making a puddle of fuel on the top of the engine.

The thing is i never smelt fuel or noticed anything strange? it did use a bit of extra fuel but i put this down to bad tips as the compresion is low.

How lucky was i not to have a Burnt out T2 sat on the drive? Is this common or am i a one of case?

Pretty common as the rings will dry out with age. Especially common if they weren't installed correctly in the first place.

Doubt it's much of a fire hazard if it's not leaking unless you wiggle the injector. They don't move much under normal operation, so any fuel that comes out will probably come out as vapour.

When you reinstall the injectors, use new o-rings and coat them with vascelene. Slowly push and rotate them in, being careful not to pinch or rip the o-ring.

When a car gets to that sort of age i expect seals etc to start geting worn or damaged but i was'nt expecting that.

Not nice to see fuel all over the place when two days before you where giving it boot fulls down the Motorway?

No, it certainly isn't. I was in the same situation with a cracked fuel line, and it was very unnerving. Luckily, it's all pretty cheap to fix...

Make sure when replacing the primary injectors that you you use that little black plastic spacer between where the fuel rail bolts to the housing.

I noticed that when I had mine off and replaced it that there was quite a bit of up-and-down slop in the primary injectors. Almost like the fuel rail was not pressing down tight enough to make the injectors seal in their holes. I left the black plastic spacer off hoping that it would help keep a tighter seal, but I had leaks. I put it back on and left the slop there and now it is fine. I don't understand how there are no leaks when there is that much "play" in the injectors being able to move up and down.

Get new o-rings and new rubber grommets that go down into the injector holes too. Not replacing something that cheap is stupid. You do not want leaks after you get everything re-assembled and then have to tear everything back apart. Mazdatrix sells them.

Those injectors should not move up and down at all. Make sure the grommets (in addition to the o-rings) between the top of the injectors and the fuel rail are there, and in good shape.

yeah I was kinda worried when I put my injectors in and they did move, not up and down though. I was able to twist them around a bit, this kinda made me nervous too! but they don't leak, so I guess its all good. And that little black spacer thing is important I found out when the orings got all tweaked and I had to replace them.

I'm going to be changing my secondaries(as soon as they come in, supposed to tomorrow) real soon here. When you said coat them with vaseline, how much? Just a small amount right? I have never changed injectors, but its not a big deal right? Sure don't want to have to take my car apart again anytime soon.
