I got the 3 dvd set from iloveracing.com but their site seems to be down now...great discs though. The story is, well, lame...but a lot of fun and a decent 5.1 mix with a lot of great sound effects and surround.

ok first of all the story of initial d is not lame, its a great story with racing as a side story. Yes two of the characters use RX-7's, and it turns out that even though they were both defeated they became better and are still excellent drivers. Also if you want to watch initial D i would recommend downloading winmx and downloading the eps onto your computer. Its cheaper than buying it. There were 2 'stages'
1st stage is 26 eps
2nd stage is 13 eps
3rd stage is the Movie
Extra Stage is a stupid OAV on Miko and Sango (you'll learn about them if you watch the first stage)
Battle Stage: 42 minute long synopsis of all the battles, redone with higher quality CG animation.
And yes before you ask, i am an anime freak.

i just happened to have the whole set I think I have watched it 3 times already. I normally give it a 2 weeks to a month window before I watch it again I learned a lot from this movie too.
Hey l33trx7, since you mentioned you are an anime freak, what other anime (racing/cars) would you recommend to watch? My first anime is the Initial D

i love initial d. i don't think it's real or any of that crap where you get kids trying to do gum tape death matches or "gutter runs". i just love it cause it's anime and about cars, and drifting i watch other anime as well. i don't think watchng initial d id best if you download it. i have the DVDs as well as all the d/l episodes and they are better, forone they are in japanese with decent english subtitles. most of the downloadable initial d is in chinese with shitty english subs.

I have the entire series, I'm waiting for the 4th stage to come. I enjoyed the story. Atleast when it came to the racing part of it. The racing animations are pretty sweet. And the places they show are (atleast partially) taken from real area's in Japan (not sure if the names are the same though). I've seen a couple of sites that have pictures of the different area's.
The Best animation was done during the 2nd stage, but the best race was ( IMO) @ the end of the 1st stage with the White FC. And not because it's an FC (although it does help), but because the guy who drives it is suppost to be the best street racer in japan (or something like that).
If you can sit through fast N' the Furious, you'll love Initial D. Unless you hate having to read subtitles.
If you want just the racing (and not story, althought the story makes the races seem better) Go grab "Initial D: Battle Stage" nothing but the races, VERY little story (only what they decided not to cut out from teh race scenes). I got it for $13 including shipping off ebay.
You can probably find Battle stage on winmx or kazaa. Best place is to hit up the Anime channels on IRC.
Just about every anime fan has Initial D.

to anyone who has seen the show:
When bunta drifts and lights the ciggarette gratest moment in the show.
when takumi drifted the S13 w/ ikitani in it. Laughed my *** off for five minutes.
The double drift with the FC and AE86, I got cold shivers. God that was an awsome drift (even if it was animated)
The dumbest race was the one in the snow. (this happens in the movie) I mean how fake can you get. Watch it really closely, you can see where the animators cut off the physics in the world and made the car turn. And yes those sounds you here when he drifts, they are the tires squeeling. So stupid.
SPDST3R:
Ill ask my local anime guru tommorow. Im not th4 1337 4nim3 gu`/. I do know ex-driver is really good. and really funny. Can't think of any off the top of my head. Also if you want to get the heads up read the import manga. (you just need to know japanese)

I loved the show, the DVDs out there are bootlegs so I can't wait for the domestic release of it. Will buy it all again :-)
"I hear the rotary sound!"
When bunta lights the grit in the middle of a drift.. too funny.
Also when they just upgraded the Hachi Roku and Bunta's leg was all torn up. "This car is vicious"

ROFLMAO I forgot about that one. Hell Id be scared if I drove with Bunta. IN the manga he boasts that he can drive Akina with his eyes closed.
I wouldn't doubt it.
I would love to drive like Bunta I just have...a little problem...
