importing rx7's from japan

has anyone ever imported an rx7 from japan and:
how much was the shipping?
can it be made street legal?
-what kind of paperwork was involved?
-what kind of modification was involved for emissions?
how much extra did it cost to street legalize it?

i suppose i should mention from Japan to the United States

I usually don't say this, but if you search a little, not just in this section of the forum, but the whole forum, you'll find loads of info on importing. It's been asked hundreds of times.

In a nutshell, can it be done? yes. Legally? Um......sure. Just read some of the threads that'll come up in a search. You might also check some Nissan forums, they've got tons of info on there.

Just tryin to say that before people say it in the ******* way they usually do.

Im not saying its impossible but it sure FEELS LIKE IT! I understand people in the military have an easier time or something???? not sure but I know it was so time consuming and calling and paperwork that I just gave up and it was only coming down from Canada. The VIN doesnt match anything reg in the us because it has a Vin from Japan and they dont "cross match" them for you. So you have to fill out a LIBRARY of paper work to prove its legit.... etc

now keep in mind I was doing the FULL LEGAL WAY Im sure someone will tell you well you can do this and you can do that etc... imo ... it was so NOT worth it (for me personally)

Good luck

For me to bring mine from Germany as a driveable car it would cost around 12,000 dollars. The importers charge for the service of importing the car, then practically disassembling the car to see what parts are not US spec, then they make you buy the parts from Mazda directly(which costs an arm and a leg), then if your vehicle doesn't meet the safety standards for the year in which it was produced in the states it must be brought to the standards at your expense. For me it would have meant getting a Mazda airbag steering wheel and all components, as well as automatic seat belts installed. According to what I found out even if the car manufacturer had an exemption for that year for the airbags or seatbelts the exemption wouldn't be good since the car wasn't manufactured here. Now this is for a 90 TII Cabrio Eurospec (which wasn't produced in the US) so I don't know if it will be easier for an earlier model. I wish you luck since I'm in the military and all I would get is about 500 dollars in discounts for shipping and services. It wasn't worth it for me but that's for my car.
