Look on the spark plug side of the motor where the housings are all together. Look for signs of gooo or oil dripping from between the housings. Mild ammounts of Gooy stuff is OK but oil could mean the oil seals are going. The Goo starts getting pressed out of the side of the motor, and eventually will lead to oil leakage.

BTW, the car will run fine with any of these things, it may just need oil every once in a while.

You can check the turbo by checking shaft play. all you gotta do is take the airbox and rubber pieces off. Takes me about 5-10 minutes to get down there. I'd say any play more than .5mm is a little much.

Oh make sure the stock boost guage is working. Take a look at the boost sensor and make sure it hasnt been modified. If theres a fuel cut defender then ask what other mods and how much boost. If the person has full exhaust and full intake then thats roughly 10-14 psi of boost (S5 turbo so I dono exactly). If hes got no fuel mods then the motor is prolly hurting.

If he has mods then he better have at least a boost guage. Go beat it up and see what boost its pushing.

check these

Check its oil level just to make sure the person you are buying it from keeps it nice and topped off (check to make sure there is coolant in the resevoir tank (I keep my coolant topped so that I can see it if I open the rad cap).

These are both good checks, also get the person to rev the engine a little after the car has warmed up properly (15 minutes) (full throttle + release) and watch the exhaust for any color of smoke, black is bad, burning to much oil, white is bad, burning coolant. ( Cold days might give the exhaust a smoke color as well..but you knew that ).

Take it for a spin, make sure it feels like it has power and is showing good boost. (3/4 up the gauge roughly).
Also check braking, heavy and light, and listen for any squeeling (and the heavy braking you should feel the ABS [if equiped] react a little bit.)

Take it up to highway speeds and feel for any wobbling. Check for under-body rust (a little surface rust isn't bad).

Just use common sense, if anything doesn't feel quite right, then you should be able to feel it.

The car should hold a steady idle (after warming up) at around 750-800 RPM. Press the brake in and out at counts of 3 to see the RPMs react. the RPM should rise when you press the brake [just a bit] and then return to idle when you let off. Same goes for turning on the headlights. If the car still has A/C test that at idle and check if the car dies, it should be the same thing, RPM should rise (although mine goes down a little and then back up).

etc. etc.

Take a friend who's not interested in the car - they'll have a more critical eye than you will, since you're going to be in love with the car.

Keep in mind all of the standard RX-7 'issues' - they can probably be used to talk down the price. "You want $3k for a car whose windshield wipers don't even work?" etc...

Have this friend follow you in a car as you test drive it. Let him know that you're going to be making boost runs, and to watch for white or blue smoke under boost. A puff of black smoke is okay - that's fuel, and the car runs rich stock. Make sure that you hold boost for a good while (do a 45 MPH 4th gear pull).

The car should read to a bit below the +10 on the boost gauge. You're not too terribly interested in exactly where it sits, just that it "behaves" correctly, and that it's not way low or way high. Have you ever driven a turbocharged car? If not, go take one for a spin, and get acquainted with how they work (e.g. what RPM to expect boost, how much throttle results in how much boost, etc)

Everything else on the car is standard RX-7 fare

Good luck! I love my S5 TII, and will never get rid of it!
