Ignition wiring harness

Where exactly is it and how can I get to it? I'm installing my boost gauge right now, and can't find the ignition wiring harness. HELP. When I look under the kick panel, all I see is a galore of wires and don't even know where to start.

just take off the steering column surround to get to the ignition harness. You can tap ignition power off the blue accessory wire coming from that harness, or from the fuse box. Illumination needs to come from the red/green wire coming off the headlight switch--you can get that from the kickpanel if you trace it from the light harness, or you can get it from the instrument cluster or the cigarette lighter illumination. You can just ground it to a bolt under there.

The problem is you can't take off the steering wheel column without taking off the steering wheel. I tried taking off the steering wheel already, and it seems difficult.

just take off the cover dude. you don't need to pull off the wheel. you should see a bunch of wires going into the ignition switch. One of which will be blue. You can strip some of the wire off there with a GOOD stripper (be careful, don't mess up this wire) or even a razor blade... then take your wire that you are tapping into it and twist it around and solder it if you prefer. Then tape it tightly.

in fact, you don't need to mess with the ignition switch at all. You can get power from the fuse box... use a crimp spade terminal on an open part of the box (without a fuse in there from the factory), you may have to meter some of them to make sure you get the right one. then tap the illumination from the light switch harness (strip, twist, solder) , near where it connects to the dash harness (you will have to peel back some of the electrical tape and hunt for it a bit).

If you're not very experienced with automotive wiring, get a friend to help you some. It can be frustrating when you first do it.

Nope not possible, to take off the wheel surround. Wheel has to come off. Yes it's my first time doing electrical, and so far its very frustrating. I don't have any friends that know how to do electrical.

look at the steering wheel. There is a black plastic steering column surround that consists of two pieces. There should be a few screws holding the bottom piece in. Remove those. Then you need to separate the top part with a flathead screwdriver and it should come off. Since you have a turbo, you should a tilt steering column. So you will have to mess with the tilt of the wheel to remove the pieces, but they should come out. This will expose the ignition harness... but I must say I am concerned that you are going to accidentally screw up your ignition harness given your experience level. I really advise that you wait until you have someone with more experience than you help you out.

And do yourself a favor and get a Haynes repair manual for the car and look in the "body" section. it has some information on how to remove the trim in the car. You also need a multimeter to read voltage.

I have a haynes manual, and the trim is loose with all screws off but I can't see how this is going to come off without taking off the steering wheel. I have a multimeter. I also want to do this myself, everyone starts out somewhere.

No, we're talking about the same thing. there are screws recessed in that piece. Remove them. Then you need to pry the top piece off. And use that lever thingie to tilt the steering column down.

You DO NOT need to remove the steering wheel. even on a car without a tilt steering wheel, you don't need to remove it. just fiddle with the tilt steering lever, and make sure you separate the steering column surround with a flathead or something like that. they are just clipped together with no screws.

Oh there just clipped? I was putting force on it and didn't want to put anymore, in case I broke it. So its raining now, gonna have to give it another shot tomorrow.

So, i'm getting some progress. Managed to find some time to do this today. The orange wire is hooked up to the blue ignition wire, that was easy. Now, i'm hooking up the red wire and im stuck. I metered the wires and the white wire has voltage. But its very awkward to get at. How do you remove the clip of wires off of the ignition cylinder?

Also, where's the opening in the firewall to shove wires through into the engine bay? Can't find it.

My camera really sucks so mind that.
